—EMBERS POV
after selling the last of our produce, i hopped back onto the tractor as laura started the engine. the engine hummed and rode across the fields back home.
on the way back, a grand house caught the corner of my eye. it had thousands of windows. the sunlight shone off the white house. it glimmered and gleamed brightly.
i could only see glimpses of the interior but from what i saw, those people were rich as heck.
just as we were about to pass it, i saw a girl in one of the windows. she looked like she was reading something. she had caramel colored hair that reached a little over her shoulders. her eyes were chocolate with golden specks. it looked like you could get lost in them.
i shook my head from the thoughts, stop it ! shes's probably some fancy preppy princess. she won't notice you you're just a stupid farmer. i sighed and was about to turn back.
just as i was about to, i saw the girl fall down.
"WAIT LAURA STOP THE TRACTOR"
laura pressed the brakes with so much force, the tractor lurched over. but i didn't care much. i quickly got off the tractor and told my sister to stay where she was. she rolled her eyes at me but obliged.
i creeped along the edges of their grass and fence to the girls room. one foot in front of the other, i scaled on the wall. slowly i opened the window and jumped down softly.
the girl was on the floor with a piece of paper. she must've fainted. i kneeled next to her and checked her pulse. she was still breathing. oh thank the gods. i took a moment to study her and her room closely.
she wore a baby blue sweatshirt and black jeans folded at the bottom. her room was not quite as preppy princessy as i thought it would be.
it's sage green walls were never blank. there were post it notes, pictures, lists, stickers, drawings, and so many lights. little vines with leaves hung above her bed and around her room. her bed was normal with teal blankets and pillows.
it had two night tables on the sides and had so many books on top. she had a mirror closet and a bookshelf with more books.
"she really does like to read i guess"
i jumped in shock. "laura?!" i facepalmed myself, "i told you to stay ! what if we get caught ?!"
she shrugged at me, "i wasn't gonna leave you there" i sighed and shook my head, "oh god"
"whatcha doing here anyways ?" she asked me, looking around. i cleared my throat, "aHeM" i said pointing to the girl who was lying on the floor.
"oh" she said, not realizing the situation. "OHHH-"
i rolled my eyes, "sometimes i wonder how you are related to me"
laura stuck her tongue at me
i turned my focus back to the girl and tried shaking her awake.
