Seven Kaleidoscopes

The Beginning

"Alyce," I whisper,"Alyce!" A little more urgently now.
"Wh-what hey, how um...hi?"
"You were doing it again, you were spacing off during-" I turn and see if Mr.Yamanu was watching us,"...algebra class and remember that you can't go with me to Europe in summer if you don't pass the finals next week!"
I am still whispering but it feels loud to me. I watch as him put the homework up on the agenda board and all 26 of us moan because as usual, it is another packet based on the upcoming finals that everyone is freaking about.
"Hey! School is almost over and I bet I will ace that test. So what if I just keep dosing off and not pay any attention at all."
"I'm sure you will it's just I really could not stand it if you didn't come. We've been waiting, what, 8 years for this? We were practically 6 when we dreamt of Paris and all those amazing sights of Europe and oh! Maybe we can even visit-"
"Ok, Mya, now you are really getting me nervous!"
"Oh," I clear my throat," sorry."
"Alyce and Mya is there something you would like to share that is more educational than my algebra?"
I hadn't noticed that everyone got quiet and Alyce and I were still talking. My heart races, that feeling when you get called out in front of your class. I shudder I hate it when this happens. But I know the right thing do if it means getting Alyce one less report.
"Sorry Mr. Yamanu, Alyce and I were...uh...just talking about how great of a teacher you are and how it's so awesome when you give us those uh, giant packets..."
So what I made it up! As long as I can prevent us in the littlest bit from trouble, we would be all clear.
"Aha, thank you Mya. I appreciate being called great and awesome but I can't tolerate students who chitchat all the time so considered this a warning."
And then I look at Alyce and we laugh and think the same thing.
Beaches w/ warm sun and smoothies beat school w/ nerds and Mr.Yamanu.
