I'd first like to warn you a little before you read. It appears that there is an annoying plot line going on in this chapter, but I can promise you that if you just read on from this chapter, it isn't as bad as it seems. I don't want to ruin it for you, so all I can ask is that you're patient with us.

Go ahead and read now 😊

LYDIA

My feet hurt and I know it's entirely my fault. They said we'd be going for a walk in the woods and I decided to wear four-inch heels—not only that, but heavy ankle boots that have destroyed my feet. I can barely stand as I drop my keys on my couch. I soon follow, bouncing on the comfortable cushions. My whole body sinks into the grooves as if I'm going to be able to disappear.

As I'm planning on simply deceasing, a sweet male voice calls from the other room. "Babe, don't break the couch!"

I roll my eyes. "I'm not that heavy, you dick!" Laughter drifts into the other room as Tyler comes out of my room. "Ugh, I hate that you still have energy."

"Just because you're a lightweight," he mutters, leaning over the back of the couch. He lightly kisses my lips and we both smile. "Regretting your shoe choice?"

"Mhm."

"I did tell you."

"And I warned you about reminding me." I sigh as I sit up to make room for him, and I scratch a persistent itch on my head.

Tyler reaches down to help me take off my shoes. I don't argue, holding out my leg. "Am I going to want to see what's in these boots?"

"Not what's under the socks," I grumble. "Might want to hold your nose, too. I've been walking for a long time and it's been hot." Tyler pays me no attention, tugging both boots off at the same time and putting them down beside the coffee table. When he looks back at me, his green eyes take me off guard.

"Is there any actual damage down there?" he questions, tracing his finger over the pattern on top of my socks.

"A little."

"Should we heal you?"

I shake my head. "What's the point?" Putting my feet down on the soft carpet, I unzip my leather jacket. "I'll heal naturally. Besides, I'm not planning on walking."

"I won't carry you," Tyler warns but he's smiling. I cock a brow, challenging him. After a second, he groans, reaching out and sliding his arms under my knees and around my back. Our skin brushes, causing a vivid flash through my mind. I cringe.

Being close to people has been difficult since I woke back up. Every time I touch somebody's skin, I get flashes. They're just colours—typically red or, with Tyler, blue. No one's really sure what's going on with me or if it'll ever stop, but it means I'm limited to as little contact as possible.

The only time I don't get the flashes is when Tyler and I kiss, and again, it's unexplained. I'd been terrified to let him kiss me the first time we were close in that way, but now I know it's the only safe thing I can do with another person. To avoid giving me a seizure of some kind, we haven't gone further than that. It's been... weird for me and for him, but we like each other enough to see what happens.

Maybe my body just doesn't like contact. If we get closer, it could accept him and then we'll be able to do more. I'm not risking my brain until then, though, and Tyler's right there with me.
