Upgraded the old picture of our boy Red! Enjoy
Also, I'm really tired of revising this so if their errors, I'm really sorry. Everyday I don't publish a chapter, I'm just revising because I want the remake to be better than the original you know?
Anyway, enjoy!
There was a young man, with a head full of wavy ginger locks and a face full of freckles, driving the handcrafted carriage up to your small home on the country side. The horses looked to be wild and cursed district 5 Dapples, known for their void-like black coats, grayish spotting, their pure white manes, and their aggressive territorial behavior. Stepping foot near them, the intelligent creatures they were, was a death sentence for those who were not trained to handle them. And yet this boy, who looked like he couldn't hurt a fly, had somehow managed to tame these wild beast, put gear on them, and get them to work together to pull a carriage.
And you knew they were wild just by their gazes as domesticated horses in your district had bright tags on their ears and brown eyes rather than the reflective dark red ones.
"Hello! I'm here to..." His eyes met yours, and his mouth fell agape. He stared at you as you look up at him expectantly. "I'm here to...uh..." He's face turned pink, pinker than it already was. You wondered how long he had been outside—you wondered if the morning sun was already too much to handle. It hadn't gotten hot just yet, not in your opinion, but everyone was different. Did he need water?
"You came for (y/n) right?" You asked, smiling reassuringly.
He nodded frantically. Then he froze, mutter a quick apology in the wind before he cleared his throat. "Yes! I came to get—I mean—retrieve the District 5 champion, (y/n) (l/n)!" He announced, puffing his chest out.
"Alright, then we are set." You took a step forwards. He went rigid. You put your belonging in the carriage. Looking at the lush seating and the pillows inside for a moment. Despite how comfortable it seemed, you knew it would be a lonely ride. You noted the driver's raised eyebrows and shaky hands when you didn't get in the carriage and instead climbed to sit next to him. He cheeks burned redder when you turned to smile at him. His face was akin to the sky. "I'm ready when you are." The young driver gulped, nodding. The horses slowly began to walk forwards, turning slighting to go back whence they came.
The horses huffed, starting on a nice trot before reaching somewhat of a canter. You felt your heart drop when you looked back and saw your family home shrinking in the distance. You wouldn't see them again would you? If you were to succeed and become the next queen, who's to say you were here going to have time to come visit? And if your died...
You turned back to the driver, readying yourself to speak about anything and everything—just to take you mind off of the fact you may never see—
"Heeeey!" You glanced to the side to see your father running along side you. His strong legs and great stride helped him keep up with the horses just fine. He was smiling like a little kid and waving his hand, his long (h/c) hair flowing in waves behind him. "We'll see ya, honey!" He said, grinning wide. "We love you!!"
"I love you too." You yelled back, trying to look confident and calm. It was hard not to cry at that moment. As much as you wanted to remain strong, seeing your father smiling like that—so bright and loving—made you want to turn back immediately. "I love all of you." Your continued to tell, your voice cracking. Your eye glossed over, very noticeably so. But you successfully resisted the urge to let them fall. However, your father could still see your crying, even though the tears were not present.
Sometimes you got hurt, sometimes your be frustrated and the tears would start to fall freely as they should. But here, even though there was an absence of tears, your face still held an expression that was unknown to him. Though you were trying to smile, he had never seen you look so forlorn and broken in his life. Your father came to a halt, his smile shrinking a bit. You almost missed the fact that tears going down his own face. He continued to wave as you went down the hill your house rested on. You didn't dare look back after that. You knew he was crushed. His youngest child could possibly die and he wouldn't be around to protect her like he always had. You bit the inside of your cheek, fiddling with your hands, your eyes focused towards the red sky.
