Cole's pov:
Opening my eyes, they are met with a wondrous vision: tall trees with their bare branches making patterns against the darkening sky as tiny glimmers of light struggle to float upon this dark ocean that threatens to swallow anything that touches it. Soft, mind-numbing noises echo quietly. Listening to the serene music of the forest makes me feel like I'm a part of this huge picture. Hard but smooth against my back, the large boulder I was lying on was covered in fluffy moss: my vine colored hoodie acted as a shield against it.
When I come here, it's feels like time has frozen and I'm enclosed in this beautiful environment with nothing to fear. It's not to get away from my life, exactly, because I have nothing to get away from. I've finally put my troubling past behind me and have moved on while creating a large amount of friends. Although, being here gives me a break from trying hard to live as the person I want to be. Worried of losing people and returning to my old disgusting self, I put in a lot of effort to always be a strong minded and likable person. This place is my break, somewhere that my mind can be quiet and I can be free.
Interrupting the peace, the rustling of leaves sounded. Alarmingly, it didn't sound like it came from the trees but from the ground. Terror electrocuted me into a sitting position. A brief head rush disorientated me before the panic could set in. I was well aware of how dreadful this situation could be: I was on my own at night in a secluded area and I was completely defenceless. The noise sounded again, closer this time. Previously, I had been lulled into a sense of security because I had never witnessed anyone come here.. Kicking myself for being so stupid, I decided my best option was to run in the opposite direction from the noise. The plan didn't ensure my safety but it was all I had.
Off I went. Crashing through hedges, fallen leaves and thin, awkwardly stuck out branches; I pushed my legs as fast as they could go. Wishing I was more agile and nimble, I listened intently for anything that sounded like someone or something following after me. Unfortunately, this was a fruitless struggle as my breathing was too labored for me to hear beyond it. It dawned on me suddenly that I had flung myself in a different direction than I take when coming here. Never being this deep into the woods, a new horror entered my mind. Even if I wasn't being chased, I was most definitely lost.
Adrenaline had kept me moving for what seemed like an endless amount of time, but now my body was shrieking at me to halt. Conflict erupted in my mind as my fear of what might happen if I stopped moving battled with my body's need to stop. When my burning lungs couldn't bear it any longer, that decided for me. Positioning myself so my back was against a large tree, I peered into the frightening depths of darkness that had swallowed my surroundings. My eyes could no longer behold the dazzlingly lit up sky, it was blocked out by thick branches above me.
I was screwed.
