Merida's POV

Knock knock knock.

I groaned, my parents must be home from their meeting.

They left yesterday afternoon, and it's already been two days. I had really been hoping that they died in a car crash this time.

I hate them.

I used to love them, think that everything they did was normal, that is until they got me a tutor to fine my hacking skills. I found out so much through the internet.

I learned about what real parents do, what normal lives are like. Nothing like this horrible, wretched life that I lead. People are happy, not happy like when I get a hit on my martial arts instructor, Master William Cobb.

They have real joy! Like when my dad fell off a ladder or when the seamstress stabbed my mom with a needle and I had some weird facial expression that made them angry at me.

Of course I was beaten for it, but it's one of my favorite memories.

Anyway, back to what's going on right now.

I laid down and watched under my door as our butler walked briskly by and opened the front door.

"Mr. Jones. To what do we owe the pleasure?" The monotonous butler asked.

"You've heard the rumors haven't you?" A husky voice asked.

"Yes. But I'm sure the Browns are fine, they are a resourceful bunch, the two of them." He answered.

I rolled my eyes, about as resourceful as their chubby wallet.

"Well, it's been a day. You know my business doesn't run on normal orphans." Mr. Jones said.

"Yes, well, Ms. Brown isn't exactly your usual type my friend, she's being groomed for something higher than fighting children in the sewers." I frowned at my butler's words.

Fighting children in the sewers?

"A higher purpose true, but she's only a burden now that the Browns are dead, along with the rest of the Court. It'd be best if you just gave her to me. She's not exactly a secret anymore, not after what happened last year. Less generous villians will come looking for an apprentice. And you said so yourself that she's getting defective." Mr. Jones said, "Of course, you'd be paid a great sum of money for her."

"Well with the child's parents gone, I guess I don't have many other options. You can have her as soon as I get the money." My butler said.

Did I just get sold?

I quickly got up as footsteps started heading my way. I grabbed my sword from the closet and then climbed on top of my dresser.

The footsteps stopped right in front of the door. I could see shadows in the light that spilled in.

"Take it. I want to be back in the sewers before nightfall." Mr. Jones said.

"Of course."

The door opened and I held my breath as a giant reptile man walked through the doorway.

Mr. Jones is a giant lizard!

"Where is she!?" He demanded, turning back towards my butler.

"Probably hiding somewhere, waiting for you to get closer so she can jump out and stab you." He said bluntly.

Really? You just had to give away all of my tricks didn't you?

The reptile man turned his back on me and picked up my bed, checking under it.
