KOUSHI SHUT HIS HOME'S FRONT door as gently as he could, careful not to make a sound given the night hour. Every day, his visits to Y/N ran later and later, and he found it harder to farewell her and leave her alone, a girl too small for the enormity of what had been forced upon her.

Maybe he could never leave because she was dying, but some deep, dark place within Koushi told him otherwise.

He just wasn't ready to face that. Not yet.

"Kou, why are you home so late?" The small voice brought him to look at Kosako, standing at the top of the stairs and rubbing his eyes blearily.

Koushi gave his younger brother the widest smile he could muster, though it was a sad and tired effort. "I was visiting Y/N."

"Is she getting any better?" he asked, in all his young and sweet innocence, despite being a teenager himself. "Is Y/N going to die, Kou?"

That sudden statement shocked Koushi into dropping his jacket on the floor when he attempted to hang it up. "Kosako! Why would you say something like that?"

"Will she die?" Kosako asked again. "Will it be because I knocked into her?"

In the dark, it took him a moment to see, but Koushi finally registered the shadowed emotion on his younger brother's face - guilt. It was then that he remembered he hadn't told any member of his family why the girl he'd grown so close to in such a short period of time was in hospital.
