"Team USA... wants me..?!" I ask my parents, a shocked expression on my face.
They nodded enthusiastically. We were in the kitchen of our small apartment in New York City. Me, my mother, father, and older brother all lived together in a tiny apartment in Manhattan. I didn't mind, because I was usually never home. I was always playing hockey. It was always practice, a game, or just generally for fun. Hockey was my life.
"Honey i'm not going to force you to go, but you might never get another opportunity like this-"
I interrupted her before she could finish, "are you kidding?! OF COURSE i want to go!!"
My parents' faces lit up. I tried to keep myself calm, but inside it felt like my stomach was doing cartwheels.
"KEEP IT DOWN!" My older brother Kade yelled from his room.
I ignored him. I looked at my parents. They seemed even more excited than me. Just before giving my dad a hug and kissing my mom's cheek, I ran upstairs to pack. As I was looking for a suitcase and started packing my clothes, many thoughts went through my head. Will I make friends? Will I let down everyone? Will I lose my temper like always? I shook my head to clear my thoughts as the door to my room opened.
"Yo maeve. What's the big event? Why are you packing?" Kade said as he leaned against the door frame.
I rolled my eyes at his cluelessness, "The hockey team, team USA, wants me to be on their team. Yes, I do have to go to a whole different state alone but.. it's worth it don't you think?" I mean- hockey is one of the only things i really enjoy.."
I started rambling on and on before he stopped me.
"They really wanted you?? out of all people YOU?" He said sarcastically.
I flipped him off. He playfully rolled his eyes and left. Hopefully Lucas can come to one of my games. Right, Lucas! I knew I forgot something. I ran to the phone in the hallway, and dialed Lucas's home number.
"Pick up. Pick up." I murmured.
"Hello?" I heard Lucas say from the other line.
"Lucas! Guess what just happened.." I said.
"What?"
"Team USA.. wants me!" I practically screamed into the phone.
"The hockey team?! no way. I'm so happy for you." He said, as I smiled to myself.
I heard his mom in the background.
"I have to go, we're having dinner. I promise I'll listen to your games on the radio!" He promised.
"Good night Lucas."
"Night Mae!!"
