I wrote this in a lil over an hour just to have fun w/ 1 of my favorite characters.
Kat Tells
Kat was coming over to my house for lunch and to... well talk. Kat talked more than anyone I'd ever known before. She also talked fast. Arch made some of that good chicken salad on Croissants and sweet sun tea. I'd cut up fruit and sat out kettle potato chips.
"Hey Sassy," Arch said. "Has Perky ever told you about her Uncle Buggy?" He asked.
"I don't think so, no," I answered.
He pursed his lips into a thin line and teared up.
"Oh my goodness, what?" I asked. "What happened?"
I thought he was trying not to cry. I was wrong. Arch's face turned red and he laughed till tears ran from his eyes.
"Ooh, oh my," he said, "ask her about her mother's family," he finally choked out.
Kat came through the door, with her heels click clacking on my hardwoods. She was talking on the phone and chewing two sticks of red licorice. For as long as I've known Kat, she's either about to eat, eating or just got done eating, she was also a size two. Life wasn't fair.
"Hey Mama, let me call you back I'm at my friend girl's house..." "Okay..." "Okay, mama..." "Tell daddy I said hey. Awright bye."
She dropped the phone in her bag and said hey to Lyle. She then kissed Arch with the sticks of licorice hanging out one side of her mouth. Finally, she, double air kissed me.
"That was my mama on the phone, sometimes she won't let me go; I was just home last weekend."
"How yo mama 'nem?" Arch asked with a huge grin.
I cracked up.
"Shut up, Arch," she said with a laugh.
"You taught him that," I reminded her.
She pointed at me, "You shut up, too."
I laughed harder.
Kat was about five foot five, thin as a dime with skin the color of Toffee or Peanut Butter. She wore her hair in a Bob hair style. I call it The Ka-bob. She's near fifty but looks fifteen years younger. When I first got to Dallas, she was the second person I met. Her accent was like someone popping a rubber band against my ear.
"How's your Uncle Buggy?" Arch asked.
"You always tryna start some shit, Arch?" Kat said with a smile.
