The Sorting Ceremony

Before we arrived at Hogwarts an older student with a badge on their uniform that says "Prefect" comes into our compartment and says, "Hello, sorry to interrupt, but we are nearly at Hogwarts so you should probably all go put on your robes." We all nod at her and she shuts our compartment door and leaves. We all then go into the bathrooms on the train to change and then meet back up in the compartment.

Before we know the train is slowing down and comes to a stop at a small train platform. We look out the window and see people starting to get off of the train and that tells us that it is time to get our things and then get off as well. 

I then hear a loud male voice shouting, "First years, First years, gather 'round!" Tate then nudges me and I look at the man and see that he is huge, he has long hair, a long beard, and he has to be at least twice as tall as a normal man. We all gape at him as we walk up to him. "Don't be shy, gather 'round!"

"Alright, this way to the boats." Then he leads us to the water where there are a bunch of small row boats. Tate, Devin, Cedric, and I  all slowly climb into the boat to prevent it from tipping over.

After we are all in the boats they one by one, start to pull away from the small dock. The boats pull us slowly through the water and then a huge castle comes into view. "Is... is that Hogwarts." I ask Devin he nods, but doesn't say anything to me in pure amazement at the school. It truly is a beautiful sight to see. There was light coming from the windows and it gave the school a warm glow. It was just absolutely beautiful. 

When we got off of the boats we walked up the stairs that led to the front doors of the school. Then the door opened and we all walked in, we walked up the stairs that were there until we saw an older woman with a black hat and green robes. 

"Welcome to Hogwarts. Now in a few moments you will pass through these doors and and join your classmates, but before you can take your seats you must be sorted into your houses. They are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Now, while you are here your house will be like your family, your triumphs will earn you points any rule breaking and you will lose points. At the end of the year the house with the most points is awarded the house cup. The Sorting Ceremony will begin momentarily." Then she walks away to let us get ready to be sorted. 

I look at my new friends and say to them, "I hope we all get sorted into the same house, because I already consider you guys my friends." Devin, Tate, and Cedric all nod in agreement.

Then the woman walks back to us and the small amount of chatter that was happening dies down. "We're ready for you now, follow me." She says with a softer, almost soothing tone. I think she is trying to calm our nerves. I know I am nervous considering I have no idea what this 'Sorting Ceremony' will entail. 

The huge doors in front of us open and we walk in. As we do, I see four long tables set vertically. The table on the far left side has students in dark green robes with silver accents. The next table over has students in blue robes also with silver accents. On the other side of the walk way is the next table with students wearing red robes with gold accents. The last table beside that one on the far right side of the hall has students wearing yellow robes with black accents. Finally at the opposite end of the hall across from the doors is a table set horizontally, this table has all of the teachers. In the middle of them is a man sitting in a big gold chair, he must be pretty important to be sitting in that chair. 

Finally, we are led to the end of the hall in front of the teacher's table. There are a few steps that lead up to a small stool with an old hat, that truthfully looks like it could fall apart at any minute, sitting on top of it. 

That is when the woman speaks up again, "Now, when I call your name, you will come forth, I shall place the Sorting Hat on your head, and you will be sorted into your houses." She says this as she unrolls the scroll that she is holding in her hand and then lifts the hat off of the stool and hoovering it there. 

With that she calls the first name and they are in alphabetical order, so that means I will be one of the last names that she calls. After a few names she calls out, "Cedric Diggory!" Cedric leaves the rest of us and sits down on the stool.

The hat starts speaking to him and then yells out, "Hufflepuff!" Cedric grins and runs off to the house that is cheering, the house in yellow and black. He sits down and then the woman starts to call out more names. 

After a few more she calls out, "Devin Lynch!" Devin takes in and lets out a shaky breath and then walks up to the stool and sits down, the hat is placed onto his head and like it has done with everyone else, it starts to talk to him.

After the short talk that it has with him and it sifts through his brain the hat yells out, "Hufflepuff!" With that the woman, who I wish would have given us her name, takes the hat off of his head and he runs over to Cedric and they high five each other and then sit down.

Then she calls out, "Tatum Lynch!" Tate confidently walks up to the stool and sits down and the hat is placed on her head.

It starts to talk to her and go through her head, after about a minute it yells out, "Hufflepuff!" She laughs and runs up to her brother, who gives her a hug, and Cedric, who gives her a high five. They all sit down and now I realize it is up to me.

More names are called out and as she gets closer to the N's I get more and more anxious. Then finally my moment arrives, "Seraphina Noland!" I gulp and walk up to the stool and let out a shaky breath as I sit down. The hat starts to talk to me and says about me being friendly and loyal to my friends. It also says that I am smart and brave.

Finally the hat makes his decision and yells out, "Hufflepuff!" I let out a cheer and run over to my new friends. When I get there Tate pulls me in for a hug and Devin and Cedric both give me a high five. We all sit down and the woman starts calling out names again. 

After a while of names being called out she calls, "Fred Weasley!" Since I know him and his brother and their parents were so nice to me, I listen in. He walks up to the stool with a confident air around him. He then sits on the stool and the hat is placed on his head.

It calls out, "Ah another Weasley," and then starts to talk to him. After a few seconds it yells out, "Gryffindor!" I let out a sad sigh since he isn't in the same house as me and the rest of my friends. 

After he makes it to Gryffindor table the woman calls out, "George Weasley!" He looks to be the last person to be sorted. He walks up to the stool with less confidence than his identical twin brother, but with confidence none the less, and like the rest of us, he sits down and the hat is placed on his head.

"Another Weasley, all in one night!" The hat calls out and some people let out a chuckle, me included. The hat debates for a moment and then yells out, "Gryffindor!"

The woman takes the hat off of his head and he runs over to his brother and they both let out a loud "HA!" before the give each other a bro hug. It makes everyone laugh at them, I can tell that the following years with them are going to be eventful. 

With that they both sit down and the woman turns and gives a nod to the man in the big gold chair. He nods at her as well and rises, "I have a start-of-term notice I wish to announce. The First year's please note that the Dark Forest is strictly forbidden to all students. Now, let the feast begin." With that he sits back down. We all turn to our plates and food of all kinds appears in front of us and the whole way down the rest of the table.

I let out a surprised gasp and see all of the people start to reach out and grab what they want, so I do the same. I get a piece of chicken and some mashed potatoes as well as some corn.

As I start to eat and talk with th my new friends I realize how much my life has changed in the past few weeks, I went from being the odd one out at my old school to having three new friends. I can't wait to see what experiences I will get out my new life.
