Waiting. You always have to wait. Not that you don't mind, after all your boyfriend was the "Tooru Oikawa". Most of the time, Tooru was an amazing boyfriend. However, he was very forgetful. He never remembered dates or anniversaries. But you couldn't blame him. Obviously, you still gave him hell for being late or not remembering, but he was always so busy, so you would let it slide for a fee. The fee was always depending on your mood. Sometimes it would be sex. Other times it would be a cuddle session.
Today you were once again waiting. Waiting for him to finish practice like you did every day. However, something was different about today. You had noticed that the majority of the boys on the volleyball team were leaving early. Not understanding why you went up to Kunimi, a first-year, and asked, "Are you guys ending practice early today?" He replied with a simple nod and left quickly. You were confused by the response. It was almost like he was trying to get away as fast as he could. You decided to wait a bit longer to see if Tooru would come out of the gym; however, he didn't. You waited for another half-hour before traversing to the gym to look for your boyfriend.
When you arrived at the gym, you jarred the door open to catch a glimpse before deciding to go completely in. When you walked through the gym door, you heard the sound of volleyballs repeatedly being hit. You decided to investigate further. When you finally found the source of the noise, you had found Tooru drenched in sweat and panting like a dog on a hot summer day. He didn't notice you at first. He was too focused on getting his serve just right. You called his name once. He didn't respond. Twice, he didn't respond. The third time, you walked right up to him and smacked him on the shoulder, saying, "Tooru Oikawa!! How many times do I have to call your name?!" That shook him out of his trance, and he looked at you with sad and angry eyes. Knowing something was wrong, you immediately asked him, "What's wrong, love? Why are you still here? Everyone else has left." He looked at you with remorse and said, "Sorry I made you wait again." You could tell he was trying to dodge your question, so you asked again, "Tooru, what's wrong? You can tell me anything."
And like a flood, he let his emotions pour out. He ranted about how he wasn't good enough for his team, how he was a failure as a captain, how no matter how hard he tried, he always messed everything up. You clenched your fist, trying to keep your composure so he can finish his piece. He ended his rant with how he was totally undeserving of you, how he always made you wait, or how he gets too caught up in volleyball and forgets about the important things like your dates and anniversaries. He was on the verge of sobbing.
You couldn't take it anymore. You immediately kiss him, hoping that it would console him a bit. He was shocked at first but then kissed back, and after you pulled away, it was silent for a while. Collecting yourself, you started your own little rant about what a great person he was, how deserving he was, how much of an amazing boyfriend he was. How much you loved him regardless of how long you have to wait because you know in the end he was always there for you for better or for worse. While you continued on, you found it harder and harder to control your tears. You felt so bad that the love of your life felt like he wasn't enough when in all truth, he was more than enough. You consoled him for an hour, trying to help him remember that his teammates respect him and that they, although they won't admit it, love him.
After another twenty minutes of consoling, he was finally ready to go home. You made a quick trip to the convenience store to buy you guys some milk bread for the road, and you offered him all the cuddles and kisses he could ever want. Tooru felt very lucky to have you, and you felt the same.
