The deep nights during the summer months are something like no other. The warm air, it's suffocating, but at the same time it's what we crave of. The pestering gulf between aspiration and reality, it sucks. But escapism in our own minds, the things we create for an 'alternate reality' if you will, are one of our biggest and most powerful tools.

George swiped out of his phone after a session of a couple hours. A hard and uneasy sigh left his mouth as he gripped his phone while lying perched on his soft sheets. The covers weren't pulled over his body, it was too warm in his room. He gripped the thin sheet near his feet and pulled it over him, who can sleep without at least something over them? It's comforting to know you're not all out in the open even if you are in the presence of your very own bedroom.

His eyes drifted upwards. "Clay" he whispered to himself.

𝐼 𝑑𝑜𝑛'𝑡 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤 ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝑡𝑜 𝑓𝑢𝑐𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑘 𝑡𝑜 𝑦𝑜𝑢.

Hell he hasn't even met the boy in person. Lucky for him Clay was bound to visit all the way from Florida on the seventh, that'd be in five days. The thought ripped at his imagination, he's never shared his feelings to someone, not one's like these. His face grew hot and his eyes wandered even though there was nothing to see in his dark room.

He couldn't take it anymore. His phone was up to his face again within seconds. The bright glare nearly blinded his poor eyes. His hand swipped through his contacts. Before he knew it his finger was hovering over the call button under Clay's name. Soon after the phone was buzzing waiting for an answer, the longest few seconds of his life.

"George what's up?"

Silence from George's end followed.

"George are you okay?"

"Oh uhhh, yeah yeah."

His voice mumbled sounding exhausted.

"Heh why'd you call?"

Clay was obviously very confused with George's unplanned call, it took him by surprise.

"Oh I just, I'm no sure, I'm bored."

His mind went blank. Now that he was on the phone with Clay it was different, a different side of him came out. He just wanted to be connected to Clay somehow, even if it's through just a simple phone call. He didn't care if he talked to Clay during this time or not, he just wanted to be in the other boy's presence.

"Isn't it late over there?"

George eyes flickered over to the alarm clock on his bedside table. It read 4:04 am in bold red letters that glowed.

"Yeah it's pretty late sorry for calling, I completely zoned out. My messed up sleep schedule is throwing me off a bit."

"That's okay. George?"

"Yeah?"

"I can't wait to finally meet you in person."

George's breathing became uneven. Did Clay really just say that? It shouldn't be a surprise but this made George feel amazing hearing these words come from the blonde's mouth.

"Do you really mean that Clay?"

"Yeah, of course I'm excited to finally meet my best friend!"

𝑓𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑑 𝑓𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑑 𝑓𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑑

This word rang through George's brain like a bottomless void. George knew he was Clay's best friend already so why did this label hurt so bad? He didn't want to just be friends with Clay and he didn't want to be referred to as that. But he knew Clay most likely didn't share mutual feelings.

"George you there?"

"Yeah I'm really excited too! Sorry I don't know where my mind is right now."

"Get some sleep for crying out loud, you are going to throw yourself off even more if you keep staying up like this."

"Yeah it's just...Clay?"

"What? Don't try and make excuses George."

"I know, I know, I'll go to bed but can you just stay on the phone with me for a little longer."

Silence from the other end tackled George's nerves.

"Yeah...of course."

Clay's voice grew soft and delicate.

They didn't say another word George laid his phone down on his other pillow and closed his eyes. Clay did the same. They sat there for a bit and Clay assumed George fell asleep and ended the call after about 30 minutes of straight silence. He didn't want to drain either of their batteries too low. George wasn't asleep though he watched as the call ended. Soon the already silent room became even more hollow. Now there was nothing connecting the two except for a thought.
