The two girls had returned, wordlessly staring at the table and occasionally meeting eyes only to dart them back away. Luz wanted to say something, strike up a friendly conversation, but couldn't think of anything to say. The tension could be cut with a knife. And watching the sad excuse for a moment from the other end of the table sat Willow and Gus.

"So is Luz just going to ignore Amity's confession like that?" grumbled Willow, just at the right volume so the two other girls couldn't hear her. "I mean, I knew she was oblivious, but come on!"

"She could have not heard what she said," Gus suggested, matching her whisper.

"Or she did and is ignoring it on purpose."

"True, they are supposed to still be mad at each other, right?"

Willow couldn't hold back a chuckle. "Oh, please, do you really think someone as hopelessly in love as Amity would still be mad?"

"I would be," Gus took a sip of his juice and glanced back at Luz and Amity, who were still trying and failing to avoid awkward eye contact. "Should we help them?"

"No, I think they'll be fine. Besides," She reminded, "They get their spirits after school today. If there's anything I know about theatre, it's that the spirits of the leads possessing you and your crush is one heck of an icebreaker."

"Ohhh, you're right!" Gus lit up, unusually invested in the drama. "I'll bet you five snails that they start dating after rehearsal today."

Willow thought of this wager briefly, then posited a counter-offer: "Neither of them are forward enough. I'll bet they start dating by opening night at the latest."

"You're on, Park!"

They shook on it, but were interrupted by Luz's interrogation as she slid closer to them on the bench. "What did you two just bet on?" She spoke and narrowed her eyes as if she were asking King what he had in his mouth.

The two friends eyed each other. "Uh, nothing," assured Willow, donning a smile that even Gus didn't believe.

"Alright, as long as it's not anything I need to worry about," Luz shrugged. She slid back to where she was and continued picking at her lunch, unaware that Amity's eyes were still glued to her.

"Yeah, I give it a week, tops," said Gus.
