chapter seven

as soon as miss jenn finished her singing, carson let leighton's hand go and smiled at her as she looked at him. leighton swallowed her saliva harshly and felt ricky tug her a little bit. "are you okay? who was that?" he asked. the girl rubbed his hand with the back of her thumb and the students formed a sort of line to sing the warm up son.

"that's carson smith. you remember him right? from middle school?" she whispered hoping no one heard her but ricky. "i think so, were we friends?" he asked still not catching on who carson was. "he was the one.. who made a bet on me.. it doesn't matter ricky. he's just back and he said hi to me. let's worry about auditions first then we can talk about it?" leighton sort of begged as ricky's face fell into a sort of angry and jealous face.

ricky didn't find himself to be very jealous-like, but he finally realized who carson was after she told him and saw him holding leighton's hand. his girlfriend's hand. ricky instantly felt nervous and leighton spoke again. "you got this, love. good luck." she said and reached up to kiss him cheek.

the music started to play a rendition to the song 'belle' from the musical and everyone stood ready to sing their parts. carlos being the first and up front a few inches from the group. leighton suddenly stepped forward and started off with a quick, "bonjour!"

ricky was the first to sing the first verse of the song but his voice was in an odd tone and he sounded way nervous. ricky picked at his nails as his eyes stayed glued to the music sheet. "t-there goes the baker with his tray like always, the same old bread and rolls to sell.." he trailed off and looked up after. leighton's mouth hung open, hearing her boyfriend off key took her by surprise. she thought he was prepared.

leighton then had to sing after ej and seb went. "bonjour, good day, how is your family?" she sang and listened to each student who hit every note perfectly. the nerves she had before and distraction eased away as she continued. gina was right before leighton had her solo part and she placed the music sheet down.

using her hands and bringing them to her chest, leighton started. "oohh, isn't this amazing.. it's my favorite part because you'll see..." she trailed and hit a note she was so worried about when rehearsing with gina. she looked at her friends and shuffled to them fast and still sang her part. "here's where she meets prince charming.. but she won't discover that it's him till chapter three.." she continued and looked over to see the same blonde girl from lunch staring right at her.

the girls squeezed leighton as she finished her solo part and she watched ricky move up again to sing. this time making a face instead of her mouth flopping open. ricky was singing in a deep voice that didn't fit him. ej was next and carson stepped forward and sang, "so i'm making plans to woo and marry belle." with the perfect tenor pitch.

the students continued singing together right as another small solo part came up, kourtney was supposed to sing and as she was going to step up, the girl from lunch jumped in front and started singing. leighton saw kourtney turn around to look at her friends for help and leighton quickly pushed her a few inches more in front of the young singer. "sing kourt." ashlyn said through a faux smile.

"i want it more than i can tell.. and for once it might be grand, to have someone understand. i want so much more than they've got planned.." kourtney sang louder than other girl who looked angry that her moment was taken. however, it wasn't and it was meant for kourtney but she didn't seem to know that. at least that's what leighton thought.
