Ryder sat quietly, tormented by disturbing thoughts of his teacher as he stared at Miss Rose. She was a beautiful woman just past mid twenties, unmarried, with long black hair and a hot body that was the fantasy of more than a few students, himself included. If only he hadn't just learned that she was his cousin. Such was the perils of having a large family, you sometimes didn't know who your cousins were. And he should have given how closely related she was.
Saskia had a face that wasn't gorgeous but had the right blend of austere beauty and caring mien. With her jet black hair, hanging loosely about her shoulders and dark eyes, she could turn her tender personality into a stern and commanding presence.
When Ryder transferred here, his last year of high school, he had been shocked by the casual and even rude behaviour of the students. There was a complete lack of respect and a deplorable range of questionable conduct. Telling teachers off and open rebellion were the norm here. No one would even think of acting that way as his old school which was run by a religious order of nuns. The rules there were strictly enforced with very little leniency. If one didn't listen they quickly found themselves in the principals office with a date with detention. That always comprised of assignments or lines from the Bible. If the crimes were numerous or severe enough, it was expulsion with a long talk with their parents. Seeing as St Leudomer's was a prestigious institution, all the parents were actively involved in their kids lives one way or another so a call from the principal's office was quickly related to the child in question.
Sighing, Ryder looked over to the girl seated next to him, a Samantha Lower. Samantha was a pretty girl with a mass of long brown hair and an athletic body. No, pretty didn't cover it, she was beautiful. She was also very kind and helpful. As though sensing it, she looked his way and he responded with a sheepish smile before returning his attention on Miss Rose and the history lesson.
"Hey, you went to St. Leudomer right?" Charlie, a rowdy kid behind him asked, "Do they paddle students there?"
Ryder rolled his eyes, it was probably the single most asked question he got about his old school, no doubt due to it's reputation for discipline. Many of the students here simply assumed it's notoriety was gain by way of corporal punishment. Fact was, St. Leudomer never used such tactics. They didn't need to. Respect was demanded and they ensured it was received. He turned around and gave Charlie a look and shook his head slightly.
"Ok class," Miss Rose called out, "now you're to group together to better define the potential causes and repercussions of what we were discussing."
Ryder turned his desk as did the others around him so that they were facing inward, in a circle. Samantha was seated right next to him. He caught the smell of some kind of perfume and coconut.
Ryder listened as the group began discussing the Vietnam War. Ryder smiled, this was a subject he had some knowledge on since his uncle Wade never stopped talking about it. Wade was a firm believer that the States had no right to be there and was quick to discuss his beliefs to anyone who listened.
"Ryder, so did they?" Charlie asked again.
Ryder shook his head quickly, hoping the annoying dick would drop the subject. That was not to be.
"Did they do what?" Katherine, a red head who was known to have quite the temper, asked.
"Nothing, so where do we start with the assignment?" Ryder said in hope of redirecting their focus.
"Seriously Ry," Samantha said smiling, "What has you totally blushing, you have to tell us now." The girl exuded cuteness, her sparkling green eyes, her soft lips split in a quirky smile. Her whole demeanor demanded an answer.
