The sunlight was flooding her bedroom and she tried falling asleep, but her effort was worthless. Stevie stretched out her arm over to where Lindsey slept during the night and her eyes instantly flew open. He was gone. Or was he? Maybe she slept for too long and he got up? She didn't bother to put on her robe as she almost ran downstairs, going from one room to another, finally checking outside for his car. No, he was definitely gone.
Her initial feeling was heartbreak. She had sex with him and that was all that he wanted. But would he lie so much? Would he tell her he loved her, wanted to be with her? They had their differences, but she would never believe him to be such a horrible man.
She took a few deep breaths, telling herself not to overreact. He probably had to be somewhere, it's nothing. Or maybe... No! She groaned, no, he loved her, he wouldn't break her heart again. As much as she wanted to believe that, whatever task she took up, there was one thing on her mind, the girl Lindsey had mentioned.
After a shower and breakfast, that is as much as she could force down, Stevie decided the only way to stop her mind from working was losing herself in music. She sat down at her gorgeous piano, like usually, playing whatever came to mind. She had definitely lost track of time, but her writing was the best once her heart was torn apart and by the time she decided it was enough, it was after four in the afternoon.
Suddenly, a thought came to her mind, what if Lindsey left a note? She rushed to her bedroom, looking for anything that would stop her from worrying like crazy. But she found nothing of Lindsey's. Stevie went to her walk in closet, picked an outfit, put on a little make up and called a car for herself. She was going to Lindsey's, unannounced.
"Miss?... Miss, we're here."
"Oh." Stevie couldn't say anything more. She paid for the ride and got out of the cab.
Was she doing the right thing? If she was simply paranoid, Lindsey would feel she didn't trust him one single bit and she would hurt his feelings, but her gut feeling had been right almost all the time and if it turned out that she had no reason to have created a million scenarios in her head, she would say she missed him in the morning and wanted to see him.
She gasped when a gorgeous, much younger woman opened the front door. After all, she had been right. And there was a time when she could read him so well... Lindsey lied straight to her face and she fell for his every word.
"Hello." Jennifer said, having expected anyone but the woman in front of her. "Are you here to see Lindsey?"
"Actually..." Stevie shook her head. "I would like us to talk."
"Well, sure. Come in. Lindsey's not home anyway."
"When should he be back?"
"I'm not sure where he is, but he left not that long ago, saying he wouldn't be back for several hours. To be honest, I thought he was going to see you."
"So, you know who I am?"
"Who doesn't?" Jennifer smiled, leading the way to the living room. "But yes, I've heard about you, a lot. May I offer you tea, coffee?"
"No, thank you." Stevie declined, taking a seat. "What's your name, I don't think I heard it?"
"Oh, how rude of me! I'm Jennifer, Lindsey's girlfriend." One punch after another, Stevie had to take a moment to breathe. "I suppose, he hasn't mentioned me."
"Well... He has, sort of."
"You said you wanted to talk to me?"
"Right, just that I'm not sure what I thought I was going to say to you."
"It's good you've come here, I have so many questions." Jennifer noticed Stevie turning white. "Don't worry, if something happened, it's most likely his fault. I blame you for nothing."
"Which one of us should start?"
"I know some things about you, so may I?" Stevie nodded, rubbing her hands together anxiously. "I really have only one thing to ask you directly, everything else will fall into its places depending on your answer."
"What it is you'd like to know, Jennifer?"
"Since you went through, well..."
"Rehab?"
"Yeah. Since then, Lindsey's been visiting you frequently. All I want to know is whether you two have slept together?"
"I..."
"Please, be honest?"
"He stayed last night."
"I figured that much."
"We... Yes, we had sex, but I didn't know he had a girlfriend. I'm so sorry, Jennifer. I would have never ever done it if I knew, more so if I knew you were pregnant. He mentioned someone showed up at his house, saying she was pregnant, but he told me it was a meaningless one night stand and that he made her leave. Little did I know, that woman was you."
"That bastard... He really said all of that?"
"Yes. He said you two met at a bar and you spent one night together and there was absolutely no way he was the father."
"Oh my..."
"How long have you two been together?"
"Two years. A little over two years."
"I've never thought he was such a liar!"
"What else did he say to you?"
"Lindsey told me he loved me, he wanted to get back together and that kind of things."
"And then he come home to me!"
"I can't tell you enough how sorry I am." Stevie was the one to tear up. "I knew I shouldn't have let him this close to me again. What good has ever come out of it..."
"I already told you that it's not your fault. He wants the both of us I guess, but he wants to much. He's not half the man I thought he was and I was this close to breaking up with him, before you even came here."
"Are you going to do it?"
"I don't know." She sighed. "I do love him."
"Yeah, that's the problem. Once you fall for that man, there's no way back."
"I hear you!" Both women laughed despite how terrible the situation was. "I want to see how much longer he thinks he can continue fooling us both."
"You know, let's not say a word. Let's just pretend we're so happy with him, that he's such a wonderful boyfriend to you and I'm always over the moon when he pays me a visit."
"Are we going to... share him?"
"Oh God, no! He's your man, not mine. I'll just say things are moving too fast for me, I'll think of something."
"I feel bad for doing this."
"Think of it this way, do you think Lindsey feels bad for cheating on you with me and lying to me about you?"
"I highly doubt it."
"So do I. I'm not saying we should do this for the rest of our lives, but..."
"You're right, yes let's see how far he'll go."
