A Lasting Flame

Heat pushed in on all sides, sweat dripping down her skin. Her breaths came fast and short, as she gasped for air. The smell of smoke lingered in the air, a glowing light creeping in through a crack near the floor. Her skin was burning, the heat too much to handle. Silent tears fell down her face. She wanted to scream, but no sound came out. It was as if an invisible hand was clenched over her mouth. Screams pierced the air; screams that were not her own. This went on for a while. Beanie trapped, reaching for air that was slowly disappearing, screams in the background. Then the screams stopped, it was eerily quiet except for the crackling of flames. Her eyes widened, and she started thrashing about; finally finding her voice, she let out an ear-piercing scream. Arms wrapped around her, squeezing tightly. Beanie screamed louder.

"You're okay..." A faint voice whispered. Beanie's eyes shot open; there was Justice, his black eyes filled with concern, arms wrapped tightly around the smaller girl. "You're alright," he repeated; then, noticing her eyes were open, he quickly let go, as if embarrassed to be caught holding her. As if this didn't happen at least once a week. Beanie, with tears still streaming down her face, turned and buried her face in Justice's shoulder. He sat there with his arms in the air, before slowly lowering them, and hugging the girl back. "Another nightmare?" He asked soothingly. The girl nodded into his shirt, unable to speak. He sighed and patted the girl's head. "Wanna talk about it?" The girl shook her head in response, face still pressed against the boy's shoulder. "Okay." The two sat like that until Beanie's breathing slowed.

She pushed herself away from the older boy and looked into his coal eyes...Let me press the pause button here for a moment, when I say coal eyes, I don't mean coal colored eyes, I mean his eyes are literally coal, because Justice is partially a snowman. We will get to how that happened later, now continuing with the story:

"It was so hot" she whispered under her breath, the boy nodded. "They were screaming," the girl sniffed.

"I know,"

"I couldn't breathe"

"You can breathe now," the girl nodded and laid her head on the boy's shoulder once more.

"I wish they would stop," Beanie murmured with shiver. The boy put his arm around the girl once more and laid his head on top of hers,

"Me too, me too."
