Zayn looked upon the large, overbearing building in front of him, the hustle and bustle of students trying to get to class, the med students already stressing about which specialization they wanted to get in to despite it literally being the first day of school, the rich law students coming from preppy high class families already bragging about their next vacation in Monaco, the English majors already carrying an array of books, he watched it all and took it in.
He took a puff of his cigarette, then another, and another until it was nothing but a bud, he threw it to the ground, running a frustrated hand through his growing raven hair, unable to understand how he was going to deal with another year of this shit.
He had been excited for University once, he remembered this exact day a year ago; he had been so eager, so excited, so ready to embark on the next stage of his life. That enthusiasm and eagerness was crushed day by day by overbearing professors, existential crises, loneliness, depression, honestly Zayn didn't know what exactly caused his disdain for education but he knew that he suddenly went from waking up minutes before his own alarm to barely waking up at all, mentally debating whether getting up was even worth it.
"Malik!" The voice of Louis Tomlinson echoed through his ears and Zayn got off of his bike with a smile.
"It's been too long Tommo." He said with a smile and Louis hugged him briefly before stepping aside.
"We literally saw each other yesterday mate." Louis replied with an eye-roll and Zayn just laughed, draping an arm over his smaller friend as they began walking towards the building. Perhaps this was why he still came to school, his friends. There was Louis, his ride or die, his day one since the diaper days. They had been through it all together, and even when it was time to apply to universities and Zayn decided he wanted to attend the university near their hometown while Louis wanted move further away, the latter ended up changing his application last minute because he couldn't bear the thought of being without Zayn. Their was friendship was endearing, filled with devotion and an endless loyalty that made others wish to have what they had. At the same time their friendship confused others. Although they were both outspoken and headstrong; Zayn was more soft, good-natured, never wanting to offend or hurt other's feelings, never wanting to attract any attention to himself while Louis sometimes forgot to take others into account and couldn't help but command attention wherever they went. They often argued because of their differences, however, it meant that they always balanced each other out one way or another.
"Zayn! Louis!" A voice called out to them and they turned to see their friend,Liam, approaching them. Liam was quiet, friendly, responsible and caring. Always making sure that none of his mates were doing dumb stuff that would get them hurt or in trouble, although most of his words almost always fell to deaf ears. Behind him was Niall, sleepily trudging his way towards them. Niall was just Niall, there was no easy way to describe him but one thing was for sure, everyone loved him. He was a ball of energy that no one could get rid of, that no one wanted to get rid of, and he was always just so happy, his mood rubbing off on the others. Liam and Niall both left their hometown to study here and so resided in the dorms, Niall hailing all the way from Ireland, and were closer in the way Zayn and Louis were closer. However, the four of them made their own little group, a brotherhood that kept Zayn sane most days of school.
"It's the first day of classes, how are you so tired?" Zayn asked, watching amusedly as the blonde stared back at him with half closed lids.
"Forgot classes started today, thought we still had a week of summer." He muttered causing his friends to laugh.
"Didn't you arrive from Ireland like yesterday?" Louis mused and Niall shrugged, putting his head on Louis' shoulder who wrapped an arm around him.
