The evening before was anything but pleasant in the eyes of Adeline Carrington. But she was most sure the morning after would be more horrendous than ever. She intended to stay in her bed as long as she could before someone could quite literally drag her out by force.
She had no intention of ever marrying unless it was for love and even so at this moment in her life she knew she wasn't read for any relationships of any sort with any men. Her education was a higher priority on her agenda.
While she wanted what her parents had, a true love full of happiness and kindness, it would have to come after she made something of herself.
Her brother on the other hand, had completely different ideas when it came to his little sister. Within the hour before Adeline was sure to get her first caller, Sebastian stopped by her room to notice she was still in a curled up ball underneath the large duvet which was prettily covered in lace and golden patterns with the finest and most beautiful colours of thread.
Adeline was a beautiful girl, there was no question or doubt about it. But right now she looked as if she had been dragged through the palace grounds by the Queens dogs. Her hair was sprawled everywhere, tangled curls spilling onto the pillows and her face. While her mouth hung open ever so slightly as soft snores escaped the deep in sleep young girl. Some may say she looked adorable, others would say she looked a mess.
Right now Sebastian Carrington did not care. She had less than an hour to get herself ready for her callers.
And so, despite being a serious, broody man most of the time, take notice of the key word most as he picked up the pillow closest to his reach and whack his sister with it. The first hit she slept through, the second she waved it off with her eyes still shut, the third time though made her grab the pillow from her brother and throw it across the room. It landed by the doorway just as Gwen was entering the room. She looked at the pillow in confusion, having almost being hit by the flying source of silk before glancing backwards Sebastian and a now awakening Adeline. She chuckled and blushed as she entered the room with the silver tray in hand. On the tray rested several pastries and sweet breakfast treats along with a steaming cup of freshly made tea and a small glass bowl of sugar. Gwen placed into on the dressing table carefully as to not spill the tea before throwing a hair brush to Adeline without thinking.
"Brush your hair, Addy, you look like a tornado has hit you." She teased her playfully before her eyes went wide as she remembered Sebastian was stood there. She worked for the Carrington's. She shouldn't have insulted Adeline when others were around. Adeline herself never would care, in fact she enjoyed having the playful banter with her closest friend.
"I was just about to mention the devastation taken place on my dear sisters head of knots and curls." Sebastian smiled brightly, an unusual look for the older of the two siblings. When he smiled Gwen could see the similarity between the siblings. They both had their mothers smile. And what a wonderful smile it was.
"I'll leave this walking mess to yourself Gwen, I'm sure you'll have better luck than I will at dressing the sleeping beast." Sebastian smiled cheekily again at the two girls before giving them a curt nod. He made his way to the door, brushing past Gwen gently. He paused and turned to face Adeline who was now pouting, arms crossed as she sat up with her back resting against the headboard.
"Cheer up sister, the attentions all on you today." Adeline just rolled her eyes and huffed. "You have forty minutes." He told her before walking out, muttering to himself, "Dear Lord."
"Is it just me or is he more of an ass than he was before?" Adeline stared at the doorway, almost glaring at it as if Sebastian was still stood there.
"I'm sure your brother has the best intentions, Miss." Gwen smiled softly, tensing up at the insult. Although she sometimes thought of Sebastian as a massive twat herself, she could never speak ill of any of the Carrington's in a bad way.
"For himself, I suppose so." Adeline retorted as Gwen threw the covers off of her and dragged her out of the bed. "Do you think if I go down looking like this I'll scare them all off?" She asked hopefully as she stared at her hair through half open eyes in the mirror.
"Perhaps not all of them." Gwen smirked at her through the mirror.
"I have no idea what you mean." Adeline turned away from Gwen, walking towards the tray of food. She offered a plate the Gwen and stuffed half a croissant into her mouth with a slab of butter.
"I didn't imply anything suggesting the need for your defensive attitude to contribute Miss Carrington," Gwen teased.
"I can't hear you. I'm too busy eating." Adeline said through a mouthful of food.
"Gross, my Lady." Gwen scrunched her nose up.
"Isn't it just so." Both girls turned to the door as Adeline's father watched her with an amused smile.
"Hi papa," She waved innocently, patting down her hair.
"You may want to hurry up, Sebastian's about to have a royal fit." He rolled his eyes.
"Isn't he always?" Adeline retorted before sighing. "I hate this."
"I know you do."
"Then why can't you stop it? Stop him from forcing me to do this?" She complained.
"Because in an unfortunate sense, he is right." Adeline turned to her father in shock. "Women in our time and age do not yet have the rights to make a life for themselves. The world is tough out there Adeline. And although I do not doubt for a second you could make something for yourself - life, yours and ours, would be easier if you were to marry. Marry for love if that is what you want. But you've got to search for love. It won't just come to you. Love isn't at first sight, it's when you get to know someone on a deeper level. Where you can relate to someone and have an understanding with them." He told her softly, hoping she would take his words into consideration and with the way her brain works, analysation.
"If I must." Was all she said and turned away, sitting up straight as she looked into her own eyes in the mirror on the dressing table. Gwen hesitated but began to brush her hair as her father left.
"Up or down my Lady?"
"Whatever is the quickest, Gwen." Adeline faked a convincing smile through the mirror, dreading the moment she walked out of her bedroom door and down the (painful to walk down in heels) stairs.
Guess who's back...
I'm back bitches!
And I'm ready to finish this story, sorry for the long wait. I kinda forgot this story existed for a few months. My obsession with Marvel was a little extreme. But when is it not 😂.
Anyway...
I'm going to try and post a few more chapters tomorrow (or later today as it is currently 1:32 am in England) to make up for abandoning this story.
I looked at the statistics today on this story and was shocked! Thank you all for the reads, likes and comments. I'm glad people like this book because I do enjoy writing it.
