Chas went to his place and got his PS2, John allowed him to hook it up and play it with me. As I helped Chas hook up the console, Salem took his first shit in the new litter box.
"The damn cat's stinking up the apartment already," John said.
I got up, found air freshener on the kitchen counter, and sprayed the litter box.
"That won't help Raven."
"Yes it will. Well what do you want me to do, stick the bottle up his ass and spray?"
"That would be weird...and cruel."
"Ok then."
I continued to help Chas hook up the PS2. Very soon, it was ready to play. The first game he brought that came to mind was Silent Hill 2.
"Silent Hill 2," I whispered to Chas.
"It's too scary."
"Chas Kramer...I have defeated a demon my father sent to attack me, I wasn't scared. These survival games are a cinch!"
Chas smiled.
"Ok...let's play it."
He put the game in. John sat down behind us as the game loaded and onto the first scene in the bathroom.
"That. Looks. Depressing," John said.
"It's a survival game about a disease turning people into zombies, the main character's wife died some time ago from the disease."
"That's depressing."
"I know, it'll get disturbing."
"I've been to Hell and back twice in my life, nothing else can beat that."
By the time the main character was heading to the cemetary, Chas looked at John.
"You ok?" Chas asked.
"Just cravings, I'm ok."
I looked at John to see him massaging his forehead with his fingers.
"John, can I ask you a question?" Chas asked.
"Sure."
"Are you gonna undergo chemo for your cancer?"
"No, it's terminal, too late, the damage has already been done, I've chainsmoked since I was a teenager. Chas...Raven...don't start smoking, it'll fuck you in the ass later."
"We won't, we promise," I said.
"I'm not gonna smoke...ever," Chas said.
"Good," John nodded.
Then, Salem was sitting in my lap.
"Aww...Salem...good boy...good boy."
I heard the kitty purring.
"He loves you," John said.
"Can we get a puppy?" Chas asked.
"No! I'd rather have cat shit than dog shit stink up my apartment, cats are easier to take care of."
"How come you never had a pet before?" I asked.
"Parents never let me, Chas, I've told Raven this before, I've been seeing demons since I was a kid, here's a story I never told before, I was scared like a kid should be so I figured owning a pet of some sort would protect me from the demons. I asked my parents if I can have a pet, my mother said she was allergic to them...a few seconds later, my dad said the same thing. Not long later, we went to my grandma's house and guess what?"
