"Akari, please answer question.." the teachers voice faded as I went into thought.
That damn name, it's not mine, why can't anyone remember that?!
All it does is remind me of who I'll never be! It reminds me of how my parents truly see me.**
"Hey, can we talk?" I asked, nervous and a little fearful as I approached my parent, who were sitting on the couch.
"Of course, sweetheart!" My mom said, setting her phone down and nudging my father to do the same.
I had their full attention.
"I.. this is hard to say, wow." I started
"Take you're time. Take a deep breath if you need to." My father said softly. I took his advice and took a deep breath.
It's not like it'll go bad... right?
"I'm trans. I want to use he/him pronouns and go by-"
"No you're not." My father interrupted, staring at me. My mother doing the same, a seemingly hurt look in her eyes. "You're not a boy. You're a girl, you always will be." He said sternly.
"Dad I-" I started, in an attempt to explain myself, I couldn't get the words out. I felt my heart sink into my stomach and my chest get heavier with every word that left his mouth.
"No, Akari. You're a girl. None of this 'transgender' bullshit. End of discussion." He said angrily, raising his voice slightly. I flinched at the change of tone in his voice.
"Yes sir.." I mumbled, tears slowly stinging my eyes as I walked away to my room.
Of course. I should've known they wouldn't understand, they wouldn't accept me.
**
"Akari?" The teacher voice called, I blinked a couple times, looking at her,
"Oh uh, I'm sorry, what question?" I asked quietly, earning a couple snickers from the corner of the room.
"Question 17." The teacher replied. I looked down at my paper to see what my answer was, thank god I'm good at Chemistry
"B: The 11th element on the Periodic Table is Sodium with the symbol Na." I replied, looking at her. She smiled at me and nodded.
"Yes the correct answer is B. That's it for this class, the bell is about to ring, please do your homework guys, some of you guys are failing or at risk of failing this class." She announced, looking over the class of 2nd year students.
"Hey dude, are you alright? You've seemed really out of it all day." A voice from behind me asked. I turned to look at the dark haired girl, my best friend of 3 years, Rei Miura. I sighed before replying to her.
"Yeah, just I'm sick of hearing that name. I've been out for almost a year and a half and it just hurts hearing that name. It just reminds me of when I came out to my parents." I mumbled. Rei grabbed my hand and squeezed it gently.
"I know, but at this point there's not much we can do, Kota. But hey, look on the bright side, when you turn 18, my dad said you can move in with me and him if you don't want to stay with your family." She said, smiling at me. I laughed a bit at her enthusiasm.
"well. At least I have some who support me." I joked, earning a light slap on the arm from my dark-haired best friend. The bell rang as Rei let go of my hand and stood up with her bag. I stood up, grabbing my bag off the back of my seat and slinging it over my shoulder. I shoved my chair back into place under the desk and walked out of class, Rei on my left side.
"So, you ever gonna tell him?" I inquired vaguely, looking at her out of the corner of my eye.
"Tell who?" She asked, feigning ignorance. I laughed at her attempt to avoid the subject.
"You know who. That one guy on the.. what was it, volleyball team? Yeah. Volleyball team. Lev, was it?" I teased, watching her face grow more and more red.
"Kota! Keep your voice down! What if someone hears you?!" She whisper yelled at me, backhanding my upper arm as we walked to the front of the school, it was the last day of the school week until Monday. I chuckled a bit at her reaction.
"Awh, someone's likes him~" I teased again, laughing. She huffed and glared at me.
"I will kick you-" she started, we both knew she wouldn't. "..maybe. Anyways! You wanna stay at my house this weekend? Y'know, avoid your family?" She asked me, I smiled.
"Yeah, sure. I'll just have to run by my house to get some things and I'll be over." I replied, looking at her.
"Great! I-" she spoke until her obnoxious ringtone interrupted her. She quickly grabbed her phone and answered it "Hey Dad! I was just talking to Kota about him coming over this weekend."
A small pause.
"yeah, he's gotta stop by his house then he'll be over."
Another pause.
"Mhm, you'll be home, right?"
Yet again, pause.
"Okay! See you when I get home! Love you, bye." She said, hanging up the phone.
"You want me to wait for you or just head to my house?" Rei asked, looking at me.
"You can wait if you want, I'm not gonna take long." I replied, shrugging a bit "it's up to you."
