"Honey I'm just running to the store. Lucas wants to stay here okay?" Beth spoke softly from the doorway of her room. Josie couldn't see her mom because she was buried underneath her blankets, too exhausted to move but she heard her clear enough.
"Okay mom" she practically whispered back.
Beth didn't respond for a moment, then Josie heard quiet footsteps and felt her mom sitting on the edge of her bed before the woman gently pulled the blankets away from her eldest daughter. Josie forced her eyes open and she lay staring at the woman before Beth raised a hand and softly brushed the hair away from Josie's face.
"Do you need anything honey?" Beth softly asked.
"Tampons please" Josie whispered.
"Okay" Beth nodded "you want me to pick up your prescriptions while I'm out?"
"Please" Josie whispered forcing a nod and a tiny smile.
"Okay honey, Lucas should be fine he's got juice and a snack and the tv's on, Frozen's playing and Mulan is set to play next. Just listen out for him okay?" Beth asked like she was asking her daughter to babysit one of her siblings not take care of her own child but Josie appreciated it all the more because of that, she appreciated how Beth was always willing to look after Lucas like one of her own when Josie was going through one of her low episodes.
Without saying anything else Beth got up from the bed and made her way back over to the door.
"Hey mom" Josie softly called out "thanks... for being you"
Beth gave a gentle smile in return before she gently said "I love you" and pulled the door so it was only open a crack. Josie heard her footsteps trailing down the stairs and then the telling slam of the front door.
After Beth was gone the house was practically silent, just the sound of some Disney movie playing on the tv in the living room could be heard. It didn't take long for Josie's eyes to flutter closed again and for her to fall half asleep, her body and mind relaxed but awake enough that she could listen out for Lucas downstairs.
An hour must have passed after her mom had left before Josie could have sworn she heard one of the doors opening downstairs and then she thought she heard a man asking "Hey lil' man. Where's your mama?" But when she didn't hear anything else she was convinced it was just the tv and she let herself relax again.
She was almost fully asleep when she heard her door creek open again and then felt a light weight crawl up and on top of her before the blanket was gently pulled off of her again. Her eyes fluttered open and immediately she caught sight of the sweet face of her three year old, a bright smile lit up his face.
"Will you get me some juice mommy?" He whispered, moving his arms so he could put his palms on her cheeks and rest his forehead against her own.
She didn't react for a moment, then she forced her arms to move and pulled him into a light hug and she breathed in the smell of strawberry's from his shampoo.
"Yeah" she finally responded. No matter how much she wanted to stay in bed. No matter how heavy her body felt, so heavy that she almost felt weighted to the bed. She knew she needed to get up, what sort of mother would she be if she wouldn't even get her baby a juice box?
"I help you up?" Lucas asked a sweet smile on his face.
"Please" Josie whispered tears forming in her eyes.
Almost immediately Lucas jumped up off of the bed, careful not to knock his mother, ever the thoughtful boy. He stood next to the bed and held out his hands, when she placed one of her own in his he began to pull, his tanned face tinting red from the excursion. Finally Josie got up out of the bed before she turned to wrap one of the thinner blankets around her shoulders and then she let Lucas take one of her hands and lead her out of the room.
