It started as another bleak day. You silently sat on the light blue couch in the open living room reading a book Levi got for you a few months ago.

It was a history book about the world above. While you had never been outside of the underground district, you loved rereading the thick book over and over, imagining what life was like above ground. You longed to step foot outside of the wretched district you resided in, to feel the sun on your face and run through fields of green grass with vibrant flowers. You wanted to see different kinds of animals, like deer and ducks, you wanted to see the huge rivers that flowed throughout the towns, you wanted to see it all, to experience it all.

The author wrote about the large walls that surrounded the city and the current king who ruled over them. It gave insight into the townspeople and their lives, but the inner wall citizens always stuck out to you the most. Maybe it was because, above everyone else, they lived the most luxurious lives; never having to worry if there was enough food to go around or enough shelter to protect their families. It was a life of leisure and simplicity and you'd be lying if you said you didn't wish for that.

Truthfully though, any life outside of the underground district was one you wished for. Above all else you wanted to escape--you needed to escape...and it was a promise you made to yourself that one day, you would.

"Reading that old book again huh?" Farlan's calm voice pulled you from your thoughts. You looked up at him and smiled sheepishly, "You know I love it, it's so interesting...I wish we could live up top."

"Yeah, well...up top isn't all that it seems," Farlan looked away lightly rubbing the back of his neck, "Plus there are titans, so in a way maybe we're kinda lucky."

'Tuh' You scoffed, you weren't ignorant, you knew about the man-eating giants that roamed around the world. That's why the 50-meter walls were built up, to keep them out, and no titan was tall or strong enough to get around or get through them. "Yeah right Farlan, as if the titans could get through those walls. We'd be way safer up there than we would be here."

Slightly shaking his head at your remark, the tall male sat beside you on the couch crossing his arms and leaning back. "You know (Y/N), there are still bad people up top. Crime...it's still bad. Besides you never know with those titans. In any case, this place is basically invisible, hardly anyone knows it's here except some of the military police, so look at it like we're lucky."

You hummed in approval, closing the book and setting it on the table. "Yeah, you're right. Sorry... it's just that, well you know...I just wish we could get out of here."  You tried to not be ungrateful for what you had, but you couldn't help but occasionally be upset with your current predicament, even though it's all you've ever known. It seemed so weird to you that in your years of life, not once had you ever seen the sun or the moon, no stars or vast blue sky. Something so simple that you were sure people above you took for granted, was something that you've longed for, for years.

"I know kid, I don't blame you. But one day we'll take you to see the world, see the sky, the clouds, all of it, I promise." A smile graced his lips as he leaned forward and ruffled your hair. You gave a cheesy smile in return.

'I hope so'

Loud footsteps against the wooden floor could be heard just as Levi popped around the corner. "Hey you two," he spoke in his usual monotone voice, "Get ready, we're going to do some training and go to the market."

Immediately you hopped up, any chance you had to get out of the house you took. Since you weren't old enough to be out by yourself, every time one of your older siblings had the time and offered to take you, you gladly accepted.
