When you are not fed love with a silver spoon, you learn to lick it off knives
- Lauren Eden
The police car sirens rang in her ears as she tore across the paved streets of Denver, her cinnamon hair flying with the wind. She clutched the Crown of Ember to her chest as she ran, almost afraid to let go. She could see the colors of the sirens flashing, reflecting on the rain puddles. It was night, and raining too. Vivian lost track of the number of turns she took, but continued running. Her trainers slapped on the roads, threatening to send her tumbling onto the ground. But she stayed on her feet. The lights from the office buildings fell on her, illuminating her figure to the Police. As if presenting her crime to the world.
She reached an intersection and paused, debating on which way to go. She lost valuable time. The cars caught up, screeching to a halt a few feet away from her. She glanced at both directions, estimating how fast she could get out of here with the crown intact. That is, until she watched someone drop down from the sky. Right in the middle of the road she planned on taking. She groaned quietly and assessed her situation again. It was possible for her to take off in the other direction, though it was closer to the cop cars. She would need a distraction. Correction; she would need to cause a distraction. And while this decision seemed to take a while, in reality it only took a few seconds or so.
"Get your hands in the air!", shouted out a cop, halfway out of the closest car. In fact, all of them were only half way out of the car. And that is when inspiration hit Vivian. She didn't need to cause a distraction, she just needed to act a little. She whimpered loudly. The cop's tone didn't change. "Didn't you hear me? Get Your Hands In The Air". Vivian trembled violently, letting tears fall. Another cop from the other side of the car got out. "She's scared, let me handle this", Officer Jacob said to the hard cop. After getting a grunt in reply, the officer turned back to Vivian. "Hey", he began, throwing his gun into the car. "Hey, it's ok. We're not going to hurt you. We just want to take you with us, and find out where your parents are." Vivian nearly scoffed. You really think I'd be doing this if they were around?
But instead, she inched back instead, trying to stall. She glanced in the direction of the blocked off road. In the shadows, she could see a vague silhouette, lurking around the edges. As she watched, something poked into the light. Something red. The person was wearing a hat. A red fedora, to be exact. She glared at the figure and turned back to Officer Jacob. "Alright? Now be good girl and come with us. No need to be scared", he continued, finally pulling his leg out of the car. Two people from the back seat had already climbed out, and leaned on the car. If the front car didn't move, then none of them would. And all the people in the front car were outside...
Vivian's tears dried immediately, and she smiled a smile that could only be described as dangerous. She took a confident step forward. "Honestly Officer... One would think you'd know by now... I'm not a good girl"
And with that, she took off, leaving all the officers stunned. They didn't realise she was a wolf in sheep's clothing. After a moment of silence, the police came to life. The cops from the front car scrambled into their seats, while the cars behind couldn't do anything but wait.
