One thing that will never change is the calming sound of rain and thunder. When you have super heated air being blasted by intense energy interchanging between the ground and the atmosphere above your head, you wouldn't think that and over twenty seven thousand gallons of water falling on your head would be a calming experience yet.. it's a sound that strangely makes a person feel safe when they're under shelter. It's been three years since this rain started. Three whole years. Despite that, the world isn't flooded. It's been.. reshaped to 'their' liking. The Earth is no longer Earth. It's been renamed Cypro, like the roots of a Cypress tree because of the new appearance it has. The planet is now twice as large as it used to be, covered in super massive alien root systems that terraformed the planet. Some are two miles wide, and stretch across the whole planet like super mountains, and others stretch up to half a centimeter, covering walls and forming new terrain and ground, and now.. this planet hates us. Cypro.. is now completely covered by hurricanes. There are six hurricanes total, and they perfectly cover the entire planet on all sides. Top, bottom, and four along the equator, there are super massive and highly lethal hurricanes that don't ever end. They don't wander, they don't get stronger or die out. It's just a permanent swirling colossal mass of clouds and extremely lethal bursts of lightning that prevent anything from breaching the clouds. Planes, drones, missiles, it's all obliterated in the clouds of the hurricanes. Being on the surface is almost as dangerous. It's a world like no one could have ever imagined imagined. Hell would be an apt description if it was littered with the most terrifying looking demonic creatures you could think to describe. Beasts that are nothing but pure bloody muscle and tendons or.. whatever that disgusting mass of.. meat and bone is. Some have four legs, some have twenty legs, all in many grotesque and disturbing shapes. Those are more common though, about the size of a human. They have an almost humanoid shape, minus extra legs or arms, and some can be animal shaped. We believe they used to be human or animal until they were mutated when all this began, but it only happens to the dead bodies. Anyone alive for some reason don't ever mutate. It's just a theory though. No one truly knows where these monsters come from. Right now, I'm in the remains of a large office building in a huge city. I'm with a group of survivors, ten people that stayed in this building when everything first went down. We've lived here for the last three years.. and lucky for us, there's probably about thirty years worth of non perishable food in the basement sections where the mass storage is, not to mention the supplies we've found in the rest of the building. The building has 120 floors, plus two basement levels, a mass storage section, and from there, tunnels that lead to other buildings. This used to be some kind of emergency shelter restocking facility or.. something like that. It rattles so much when tornadoes pass by or when big enough lightning strikes. The beasts that roam the now alien world outside leave us alone thank God.. but that's only because they don't know we're here. If even one knew.. they all would come to kill us, like a zombie invasion but.. worse. This isn't a virus gone rogue trying to kill everyone just to survive, this is an invasion. They're here to remove us from this planet and make it their own. On the bright side, rain water is safe and drinkable. Plus with the food we have below, we're in no hurry to leave. Some of the group wants to try and migrate or contact a nearby military base that was barely missed by one of those massive root systems. Problem is.. while this alien disease didn't impact the satellites in orbit, the growth of the planet did. They've all smashed into the surface, and there's no debri left in orbit. There are Ham radios, but we don't have a working one in here. One of the group members, Alesha, is an electrical technician, and she's been trying for three months now to get one working ever since she found it. The rest of the members are just random civilians and two soldiers, and then my wife Kayla and I. My name is.. unknown. Something happened to us when we were being attacked three years ago. I have almost no memory prior to that event, and neither does Kayla. I remember rushing over here with her from a near by store, seeing the world being shredded around me in total chaos as we sprinted for the building. Gunfire was everywhere around us, explosions, screaming, fires, and.. death. All I could think of was to protect her. Then.. some internal debris of the building were knocked loose and a large slab of concrete fell and slammed into us, and after that I remember waking up in the medical facility in the building a week later. Kayla was holding my hand when I woke up, but.. I had no memory of anything prior. Despite that, I've retained my general intelligence and functionality. I guess I have 'some' memory prior to all of this happening. There's bits and pieces, and every now and then I'll remember something from before and regain old memories. What I'm happy about retaining most though is my love for Kayla. While I don't have every single memory I've made with her, I do know that she's my wife, and I feel it as well. I feel that connection with her, and I'm very happy about it, as much as I'd like to meet her again for the first time and fall in love with her all over again, I'm still more keen on keeping already created memories. At the very least, she remembered her own name. I decided to name myself Justin. Not for any particular reason other than I just like the sound of it I suppose. Aside from that, we've been in this building for.. a long time. There used to be twenty eight of us surviving in this building.. but.. terrible things have happened over the last three years, from stupid choices to.. unfortunate accidents. It's left us with the remaining ten people we have now. I consider myself very lucky to be a part of this group despite all that. The two soldiers and Alesha have really kept us going. I personally used to work in the restaurant business from what I've been able to remember, so I've somewhat been the group's cook every now and then, but mainly it's all Kayla's work keeping everyone fed. Yeah we're living off non perishable foods, it's not exactly gourmet meals we're getting, but when she preps it, it's just so much better. It has to be something to do with her technique, or.. maybe I just like it more because I love her and the rest just find it bland. Either way, I myself love it when she preps the food. Right now it's just another boring day. Everyone is taking a break from working today, so we're all in our own rooms just lazing about. Lucky for us, part of this building was used residentially, so we all have actual rooms, and not just makeshift rooms from office supplies and crap like that. Kayla and I are snuggled up in our bed right now. She has her head laying on my chest hugging my body from the side, and I have my arms around her. We're just laying here listening to the deep thunderous booms from outside, as well as the never ending patters of rain on the windows. I occasionally play with her hair, but mainly I just stroke along her back, keeping her snug against me. She says sleepily "I miss our old life." I say back to her "I do too. Even if I can't remember much.. I know it had to be far better than this." She nods and stretches a bit before squirming a little to lay against me more, her hand slipping up my chest as she pushes and pulls herself up more to look into my eyes, ruffling my shirt a bit. She smiles and leans up to lay her lips to mine, giving me a slow and loving kiss while her arms wrap around me. I smile against her lips and hug her tightly to me as we lay closely with each other. Our lips part and I say softly to her "I couldn't do this without you. It feels like I'm living two different lives.. but I don't want to live either life if it's not with you." She lays her head down on my chest just barely under my neck and I lean down to give a kiss into her hair. She holds me tightly and says "I feel the same way babe. I'm so happy we're in this together. I don't ev-" She stops speaking as we both suddenly become focused on a loud sound that emits from the hallways, accompanied by a slight shake of the building. I'm talking.. slight enough to be mixed in with the thunder but.. that was not thunder. We both lean up and I step off the bed and get in front of her, leading her to the closet. I grab an assault rifle and pistol, handing Kayla the 9mm and leaving myself with an AR, and I grab myself a couple magazines from the storage container on the floor. I tilt the gun down and slowly peak around the corner, frequently checking left and right for any signs of non human life. Not another sound can be heard at the moment. I see one of the soldiers peaking out of his room, and he spots me and motions me to stay where I am. I see he's holding an M27, and he's doing the same of slowly checking his surroundings before he motions me to slowly approach him. I turn back towards Kayla and say "Move with me quietly." She nods and keeps her gun aimed down as she trots behind me very carefully. I start making my way down the hallway towards Martin, and it takes me maybe three minutes to slowly get to him. Kayla and I slip into his room, and he closes the door and says softly "I don't know if I'm happy.. or terrified that you both also heard that loud noise. Any idea what that was?" We both shake our heads and I say "No idea. We were laying in bed and heard that sound.. and we felt vibrations in the building when it happened." Martin grips his gun and swears in frustration, stopping himself from stomping for a moment. He turns and makes his way to his small radio that he has that links with the other soldier Jake, and he switches it on and motions for us to be silent. It's nothing but very soft static, to where I can just barely hear the slightest sound of it over the rain. Then, after maybe two minutes, we hear a click, the sound of Jake switching his radio on, and Martin sighs softly before whispering to it "Did you hear that sound?" Jake says quietly back "Yes, everyone did. It came from somewhere far below in the building. We're all just below you. Bring Kayla and her husband down here with us." Martin says "On it." and clicks the radio off. He turns to us and says "You two get all that?" I nod and say "Yeah, lets get on it." As we creep over towards the door, we hear that sound again, and this time, it's slightly louder. I stop moving and say "Guys.. stop. Do you smell that?" and Martin quickly turns around, looking around with his gun aimed at the ready. He says "Smell what??" and I say "That.. disgusting.. I don't know, it's just a bad smell. It's... dusty? Like as if you just snorted the dust off a wooden shelf that hasn't been cleaned in a few months." It's so strong that I have to clear my throat real hard between breaths. Him and Kayla both shake their head, and as we start moving back towards the stair case, a very loud explosive commotion erupts behind us. We all turn around startled to see a beast slamming up through the floor with one of the other survivors in their jaw.. or.. half of one of them. It looks like a mutated dog the size of a horse. It reaches up with it's claws and tears the upper body to shreds, spitting out what it was holding onto and focuses on us. I recognize who that was. It was Michael. Martin starts firing his gun at the beast the second it started approaching us and kills it instantly. These things.. as strong and destructive as they are, die very easily to gunfire, for reasons unknown, yet. To melee weapons.. not so much. He then shouts "Get to the other staircase now! The others are lost!" After he shouts that, I see another beast crawl up the hole, this time holding someone's arm in their jaw. Before it can move much farther, I hear automatic gunfire and see flashes from the hole, followed by bullets cutting through the beast, killing it just as quickly. Martin rushes forward and we follow behind him, although I caution Kayla to stay back, and we see Jake down below. He shouts "It was just those two for now, everyone else is dead, pull me up!!" and he leaps up as Martin gets down and grabs his hand. I reach over and help him pull Jake up, and we manage to quickly get him to his feet. Jake looks.. insane. His eyes are wide, he's panicking and looking around frantically and says "The others are dead. It happened so fast therwa.. was w.. five of them. I killed three.. and then.. other two came slinking from no where and.. Michael he.. tried and.. Alesha.. she.. her face her brain and skull.. w.. we.. we need to get out of here. Now!" He turns and we all start rushing to the secondary fire escape staircase. Upon reaching it, he opens the door, but the second he steps through, a big meaty bloody arm blasts against his torso, pinning him to the wall. He screams and starts firing, and the beast that grabbed him pushes it's arm through his body and the wall itself as it tumbles through the wall and out of the building, both of them falling to their deaths. Martin stands there, stunned and says calmly all of a sudden "This is it.. we're.. done for. I'll.. I I.. I'll try to help and.. fight but.. we're done for. We're fu-". Before he can even finish, a beast grabs him as it rushes through the door, it's large jaw wrapping around his torso, and it violently shakes him into pieces, but at the same time throws him to the side as his body crashes out the window. I open fire on the beast and kill it immediately, and I yell at Kayla to hide in one of the rooms. "Kayla! Go! Hide now!! Any room, just freaking hide!!" As she turns around, yet another beast rips up through the floor, and I gun it down as quick as I can. I run quickly with her, and I hear a couple more climb up from behind. My heart is racing, adrenaline flowing rapidly through my veins, and I glance back to see some kind of reptilian beast and mammalian beast racing after us. Kayla slips into a room, and once I know which one, I start gunning down the two beasts that are slobbering and foaming at the lips rushing towards me. As the reptilian one dies, the other glances over at it.. and I swear.. for just a split second.. I see... emotion..? It then dies alongside it once my bullets tear through its face and chest, watching it ragdoll to the ground. I swear I just saw.. anger. Not savage facial movements but.. actual thought out anger. That disgusting dusty smell is growing so much stronger now.. and it's almost overwhelming. I rush back and quickly, but softly close the door, not bothering to barricade it, because if it can rip concrete to shreds, what's some soft wooden furniture gonna do? I huddle down next to her, and she's crying right now, but keeping it silent. Anger rushes through me, but I lay my arms around her and kiss her head, keeping her held tightly against me. I start tearing up myself.. and I sigh softly and say "Let's just pray together babe. Maybe. Maybe.. they'll stop searching for us and.. go away.. and hey." I lift her face up by her chin and give a forced happy smile as I say "I love you so much. So.. so much. My.. beautiful.. ..angel... ...My..." My words suddenly fade from my own hearing as they gradually slow down, as if time was rolling to a stop. My vison goes dark, and for a moment.. I think to myself that I must've died.. that.. a beast somehow busted in and swiftly killed us both, that I'm just.. now in the darkness of death. Instead.. I'm given the strongest sensation of.. an old memory. Light starts to appear in front of me, and I'm met with a vision of.. a location that I've never seen before. My surroundings are.. no longer in the building. It's no longer just an image as my body comes to life as well with new strange sensations. I'm outside in what looks like an alien forest. Super tall and massive trees that easily outdo redwood trees, and the leaves at the top are.. red. The bark is blue. The grass I'm standing on is.. light yellow? It's.. strangely beautiful. I look around, and I see no signs of.. sentient life. No signs of.. deities or.. angels, or demons, or any form of.. afterlife creatures. Am I dead or not? I start to get a sudden cold and chilling sensation in my core, as if I just swallowed some ice. I then look down at my body.. and I'm horrified to see my shirt. It has very large bloody holes in it that resemble the teeth marks of those horrific beasts, blood leaking down my body. Then, the holes start glowing bright blue, and a deep flaming light begins to leak out of my body. It looks like my skin is pouring out glowing blue liquid into the air, but it lingers around as if I was already in water. The holes mend themselves together, and I don't feel any of that, just that.. coke sensation, although now the longer it goes, the more I start to feel.. really good. I feel.. strong, quick, agile, like I could dash into the air and leap between the trees, and even punch one over if I wished. My body feels indestructible, and tense, like I just need to run and strike something. I feel the urge to scream out the pressure building up inside. Then, everything snaps to black before I'm quickly awakened back to the building, Kayla in my arms and my mouth moving on its own. Time seems to speed back up as I finish saying "..sweet.. angel." She looks at me a little confused by my strange behavior, since my words slurred a little. She says "What is it?" I say "I.. I don't know. I hallucinated.. or.. something. It was weird." I become self conscious of my voice and instead continue to whisper as I say "Crap.. right, gotta be quiet. They haven't come in here yet.. so maybe they don't know we're here." I stand up, no longer crying in anger as I wipe the remaining tears off my face. I turn and look back at the door. There's no sound at all. I make my way over to it and open it very slowly, peeking around each direction. The dead beasts lay there as they begin to rapidly decay into a strange black fluid, as they all strangely do when they die. I hear the wind racing through the hallway due to the holes they tore in the wall. I tense up with anger, closing my eyes knowing now that everyone else is dead. I feel strong senses of anger, fear, sadness, and it makes me sick and dizzy. Shock seems to wear off me finally when my.. more normal emotions and thoughts snap me back into reality. I turn back and quickly close the door walking back over to pull Kayla back into the closet to hide and huddle with me. I pant heavily with fear, confusion overwhelming my mind. Kayla is no longer crying.. or.. looking scared even, but instead looks at me with great concern. She says "Baby.. wh.. what's wrong?" I try my best to calm myself, squeezing my eyes shut for a quick second while gripping my chest as I say "I I.. I.. I don't know babe.. I.. s.something j.. just came over me I.. I had a hallucination, my emotions are going insane, I I.. tseshidi.. w.." She sees me struggling to speak and pulls my head against her chest, petting her hands along my hair. I let out a deep breath and try to regain control of my body, my fear, and other emotions that are racing rampantly through me, just hugging her tightly while slightly trembling. She says sweetly to me "Breathe hun, breathe. I think we're safe now. We're safe and alone. It's just you and me, and that's all that matters. We're alive, we're well, and.. I guess.. we now know what our plans are." I lean against her and hug her tightly, sighing as I say "I can't begin to comprehend what just happened. There were ten of us. Now it's just us. At any freakin moment.. those things could tear in here and kill us." She kisses my head and says "I don't think so. You said you could smell something weird that Martin and I couldn't. Maybe... that was some kind of warning? Do you smell anything strange now?" Weirdly enough.. I don't. I say "No.. I.. don't smell anything like that anymore. Something isn't right. After all that stuff happened.. I had that weird hallucination or.. vision.. that I was on an alien world filled with trees that.. were easily ten times the size of the biggest ones on Earth. They had blue bark, red leaves, and grew on light yellow grass. It felt like.. I was experiencing a memory. I thought I died, that.. I was in the afterlife, but.. it just doesn't make any sense." She sighs and hugs me tightly and says "I don't know babe. All I know is it's just you and me now. The others are gone. Maybe we should just.. head back to our room now or.. maybe move up a few floors so we don't have to see the.. the remains..?" She's right. Those freaking monsters. They shred humans to pieces. They don't kill us for food. They kill us for extermination.. or.. fun, if that concept applies to them. I nod and say "Yeah.. we'll go up a few floors." We take the time to take the stairs that weren't ripped through by the beasts and make our way up at least three more floors. We're now on the 110th floor, and we move into a much more cozy suite like room. We close the door, open the curtains so light gets through, and so we can see outside. We get undressed and get into bed since it's really late. We need to try and sleep. If we can sleep. Kayla slides under the blanket and lays against my body. I lean over and wrap my arms around her, our heads laying side by side on the pillow, and I look into her beautiful eyes. I do my best to get lost in them, to forget what just happened.. but it's all that's on my mind. I ask "What are we gonna do now? We know nothing about fixing ham radios.. and just the two of us? How would we ever reach that military base?" She lays her hand on my face and she says "You're my husband. That's all I care about. You're the man I fell in love with ten years ago.. and you'll forever be the man I'll follow and cling to until the day I die. Even if.. we have to risk our lives against impossible odds.. I'll happily do it with you if it means I get to live any longer of a life with you." I smile and tighten my hold on her, giving her another loving kiss as she does the same, squeezing me in her arms tighter until we can't get any closer. I roll us both over until I'm laying on top of her, keeping her snug and warm beneath me as I kiss her sweet lips. My hands roam along her delicate skin and shape, and I feel her hands gliding along my back as we kiss. A few hours later once the Sun sets behind the hurricane clouds, we finally end up getting ourselves to where we could finally sleep.
Silence. Not hearing rain for once is so.. strange. Now.. I can hear the wind. I hear nature. Birds that I can't see, chirping in the distance. Wood creaking. Grass and leaves flowing in the wind on the lowest small few branches that are around me. Once again.. I find myself on this alien world. I'm surrounded by massive trees, trees that look like they're big enough to stretch to the atmosphere, literally. The trunks of these trees have to be at least.. half a mile, if not whole miles wide. I can just barely see the bigger collection of leaves so high in the sky, and through them I see a massive giant red star. The trees aren't bunched together at least, so light still gets through. I start walking aimlessly, looking around at my surroundings. This is way too hyper realistic. I have zero indication that I'm dreaming right now. I keep feeling my body, feeling the trees, picking up various sticks and branches or rocks that I find along the way, even tugging at the grass occasionally. I do a couple of those lucid dream tests where I look at something, study and remember it, and then look away for a moment before looking back to see if it changes. It never works. I try my hardest to trick this lucid dream into revealing its fake reality.. but nothing. Instead, I just continue walking aimlessly. I quickly remember the first hallucination again and look down to see I'm just wearing my usual clothes, with no bloody holes or injuries or.. blue glowing light. It feels like an hour goes by, or hours, days even, who knows, but it just feels like such a large amount of time has passed since I started walking, and finally, I reach the end of the forest. I'm met with a sheer drop off that looks like a multi mile tall cliff edge, and before me are ranges of mountains that could be said to be bigger than anything on Earth by impossible comprehension, they're just so huge and span as far as I can see. I walk along the edge of this massive miles deep cliff, and it feels like it goes on forever. Finally, after walking for so long, I start to feel tired. I sigh and walk up to the nearest tree and sit down on the ground, leaning back against it. There's a gap where I can sit where I won't have a root going up my butt. I just lean back and look up at the red leafy sky. Through the leaves.. the sky looks purple. It's such a strange place. A large red star, blue barked trees with red leaves, yellow Earth looking grass, although it's a little tall. Uncut of course, and filled with various colorful flowers and other plants I don't recognize. Strange.. but very beautiful. Once I've rested, I get back up and start walking again. As I'm walking, I come across what looks like a building unlike anything I've ever seen before. I see no signs or words anywhere, anything to indicate English. The walls are squared and symmetrical, and it looks built typically like a man made structure would be, but the windows are.. all over the place. Some are foot level, some are above head level, and they're pretty weirdly shaped. None of them have a defined shape. Some are curvy, some are jagged, some are squared but with many angles in them. There's almost more windows than wall. The walls look as if they're made from the wood of the near by trees, and there's a stone pathway leading up to the house. At least the stones look like real stones. There's a dead firepit next to the house, with a large rotisserie above it. Just behind it looks to be some kind of small pond with.. normal looking water. I figured water here would be black or pink or something. I walk over to the house pathway, and the moment my foot touches the first stone, I'm hit with a powerful sense of familiarity. I feel like I just came home after a long day of work. I continue walking towards the house, and instinctively I just open the door and walk in without hesitation. I slip my shirt off and set it on the first table I come across. It's a beautifully crafted wooden table, much more beautiful than something you'd see made on Earth. Something like this could only be made with high end machinery on Earth, or perhaps months of hard dedicated hand work, but then I see that everything inside the house seems to be made that way. Everything seems to be just.. perfect. The floors are made of a yellow fabric like cloth material that I can only assume is somehow crafted from the grass outside, and maybe some of the leaves that fall from the trees, as there's hints of orange in it. The windows are normal looking glass, but pure glass, not plexiglass or multiple panes of glass. There's metal woven through it decoratively, and yes I mean woven, as there's many intricate patterns in it. Whoever lives here has great tastes and a very creative and special mind. I walk into the next room and find a just as beautifully custom made bed. I can't begin to guess what the bed is made out of, but it looks insanely comfortable. I go and turn around, and I sit down in the bed. It hits me that.. everything in the house is normal sized. The trees outside are beyond colossal, and so is the huge mountains or.. mountain canyon I saw. Everything here looks human sized though. I slip my shoes off and immediately I begin to feel extraordinarily tired. I flop back and close my eyes, and for the second time tonight, I fall asleep.
