The night of the picnic, Rogelio had his first nightmare since the war. At first he was sure he could hear Kyle calling for him from where he stood- in the middle of a dry and barren dessert, his thick boots crunching on the cracked sand and caking the end of his trousers with dust. It was there that he heard it again- the strangled cry of help from his boyfriend.
"Kyle? Where are you?"
He called, but his voice was harsh and his throat was dry. He didn't like to dwell on what could be going wrong, so instead of panicking he stood perfectly still, only turning his head to look over his shoulder. Then he saw him.Kyle stood only a metre behind him, arms outstretched and dirty with a jagged-looking knife in his hands. His hair was cut tight on the sides, and the top was kept back in a messy piece of cloth. His eyes narrowed at the sight of Rogelio, and without warning he lunged for him.
Rogelio turned quickly and grabbed hold of his arm with wide eyes. It was then he realised it wasn't Kyle at all anymore- but the rebel who had cut his eye before. The rebel pushed him over and lifted his arm, ready to strike, but as the light shifted over his face and shadows began to fall on his features, he looked like Kyle again.
Rogelio woke up the moment he was hit, and didn't notice the tear trickling down his cheek until he opened his eyes. It was dark in his room, with only the faint glow of the moon spilling in from either side of the curtained windows, and he realised how much harder it was to see with only one working pupil.
Kyle saw how Rogelio's hand was suddenly clenched and wondered if he was awake too. He frowned and rolled over to face him, instantly lifting his hand to the larger boy's chest to comfort him.
"Ro? Hey, what's up?"
He asked calmly, his voice caught between a whisper and a mumble. Rogelio let out a shaky breath and turned his head to see Kyle, using the back of his hand to wipe his eyes clean of tears."Bad dream, sorry."
He grumbled. Kyle watched with a tug in his stomach as Rogelio shivered slightly and pulled the covers over them up to his chin to cover his whole body, half of which was bare and obviously cold."Don't apologise..."
Kyle whispered, sitting up and pulling his shirt up over his head. Rogelio watched him curiously, just barely making out the small shadows and pools of dark that gathered under Kyle's back muscles as he moved his arms, forgetting about his dream for a moment."Body heat."
He then said, laying back down and squishing over to wrap his arms around Rogelio's abdomen. Ro smiled and wrapped his own arms around the smaller boy's body, swallowing dryly when he felt a leg sliding upwards to rest over one of his own, perfect for keeping him warm."Wanna talk about the dream you had?"
Kyle asked, still speaking quietly. Rogelio smiled and pushed himself closer to the boy, allowing their stomachs to press against each other softly as he growled a response."Not really. Maybe tomorrow I will, but I don't wanna think about it."
Kyle nodded and planted a gentle kiss onto Rogelio's chest where his head was resting."Okay."
Rogelios hands explored the ridged and smooth hills in Kyle's back, and he smiled at the fact that his boyfriend was always quite toned, but nobody seemed to recognise it because he wasn't the most skilled in combat. Kyle shivered when he felt the fingertips on his spine and smiled into Rogelio's chest."Feeling a little better now?"
He asked. Rogelio pulled Kyle closer to him and closed his eyes."Definitely."
When the morning spilled in through the windows later on, Rogelio was first to wake up. Kyle stirred from where he lay and smiled when he realised Rogelio was awake.
