The week went by surprisingly quickly, and by the end of it, we still didn’t have a spell ready. However, Caleb had started to stay at the house with us, building a small friendship with Marco, but still very leery of him. He didn’t understand what we were doing, but he watched us, interested. I could tell this gave Marco a sense of security. Caleb wouldn’t be thrown off when it was time to cast the spell. It also helped prove that Marco was doing nothing out of malice.
It was the day we were due to leave. After we were done with our practice, Marco sighed, pacing. “It’s really not right for me to go with you. This is a family trip. I’m not family.”
I walked up to him. “But we need you, Marco.”
“Yeah, I get that.” He sighed again. “But I’d be so out of place.”
I shook my head. “There’s plenty of things to do when we aren’t working on the spell. And everyone is okay with you coming, including Ambrosia and Caleb.”
He sighed again. “Fine. I’ll be back when it’s time to go.”
I took his hands. “No, you’re not leaving in a huff like that.”
He smiled slightly. “I’m fine. I just don’t want to intrude.”
“You’re not, okay?” I hugged him. “Calm down. It’ll be fine.”
He nodded. “Alright, but I still need to go. I have clothes to pack.”
I smiled and let him go. “Fair. See you in a few hours.”
He smiled back and teleported away.
I went to my room to finish packing my suitcase for the trip. We were due to catch the train in three hours. I wanted to make sure I was completely ready.
Morgyn walked in, resting his arm on the door frame as he gazed at me. "Did you pack the most important thing?"
I looked up at him with a big smile. "Of course I did!" I held up the envelope with the court papers in it. They were copies of the originals, so Jewel could keep them, frame them, or put them in a scrapbook.
He smiled as well. "I guess Ambrosia planned this big bash that coincides with the festival of snow on the mountain. She invited Jewel's friends to join us as well. I think she's more excited for it than Jewel will be about it."
I continued smiling, also excited. "Big sis is helping to show more love to her than she's had her whole life."
He gazed up at the ceiling, tracing the paint patterns with his eyes. "Yeah. I only hope Jewel loves it just as much."
I walked over to him and wrapped my arms around his waist. "She will."
He kissed my forehead. "This is exciting."
I smiled happily. "Yes, it is. I haven't taken a vacation in a long time. The events that are about to happen just make it even more exciting."
He helped me pack up the rest of my stuff and brought my suitcase downstairs, by the door. I stood at the window, looking out over the city as the sun danced across the windows of the buildings. We had a long train ride ahead of us. I sighed and turned toward the kitchen, packing a large bag of snacks and treats for us in case we got hungry.
"You know they'll have meals on the train, right?" Ambrosia giggled, walking up behind me.
I laughed quietly. "It's just precautionary."
"Fair enough. I'm always up for a snack." Ambrosia reached around me exaggeratedly and stole a small pack of cookies. She tore it open and popped one in her mouth.
