Nat announced she was cooking tonight. I would have settled for pizza- or her. But she pushed me into the shower and told me to relax, I rolled my eyes I hadn't expected her to be so...human.
After drying my hair I headed through the cabin to find her. It was pretty bare, just some furniture here and there, no photos- nothing personal. I paused for a second to look at the only painting that seemed to decorate the cabin, it was a building one I knew I recognised but I couldn't quite place. I could ask her later, that was if this was ever hers. Always so mysterious. I found her sat outside watching a fire pit. I hate fire. It's my best kept secret, I don't think it's even in my files. I took a shaky breath and stepped towards her. Nat heard my footsteps and turned to face me.
"Hey ba—erm agent" she stumbled over that word again, I wasn't sure how I'd feel if she actually called me baby. I pulled my focus back to her when I realised she was speaking again, "I got us some vodka...no wine tonight" she smirked. I winced remember that hangover that had nearly wiped me out in France!"Trying to get me drunk again Romanoff?" I raised my eyebrows as she poured me a rather generous drink.
She looked worried for a second before I softened my face with a smile. "Isn't drinks something people do on dates?" The words caught me off guard.
"Is this a date?" I sat down next to her, so close we were almost touching.
"It was all dates..." I almost didn't hear the words she whispered as she stood up and headed back into the cabin leaving me alone with the fire. Now she was gone the fear began to creep into my mind. I was too close, but I couldn't move. The flames danced making my vision blur. I tried to blink the tears that were threatening to blind me back.
"You doing okay?" Her firm grip found my shoulder pulling me back, I hadn't even realised I was leaning into the fire. It was like a magnet to me, pulling me in to its deathly grip. "You look like you've seen a ghost" I could hear the concern that laced her words.
I shook my head "no sorry, I just choked on my drink that's all" and the award for worst liar in the country goes to me. I rolled my eyes at myself as o turned to face her.
Worry was etched on her face but she didn't press, instead she handed me a mountain of food. I began to wolf down the spicy chicken she'd made. It was so good- was there anything this woman couldn't do?As the night continued I found myself leaning into her more and more. It felt like she was keeping me from falling into the fire that wanted to consume me. Each time she left to get a drink or food I felt the pull of the fire begin again, I didn't lose control again but I couldn't pull my eyes away from the orange glow.
"You like to watch the flames?" I jumped at her voice, I didn't even know she'd come back from the bathroom.
"Er yeah, something like that..." I didn't know what else to say. I didn't really want to lie to her but I also couldn't tell her the truth. We sat in silence for a while after that, I think she knew I was keeping something to myself and I didn't know what to say to pull the conversation back. I was fine watching the flames from the safety from her arms until she threw a log from by her side into the pit. Sparks flew into the air, as the flames devoured the log. I threw myself back as fast as I could knocking Nat and her drink flying in the process. My vision clouded over, I was so sure the flames were on me. I lost control of myself.
"Jesus...agent...what the...." Nat's words echoed in my mind but I couldn't grab hold of them. Panic blinded me and then silence. I floated around in my own empty thoughts for a while, i felt like I was at sea. Waves of nothing."...and that's the story of how I once lost my eyebrows" Nat's voice finally broke into my thoughts, I must be hallucinating. Why else would she be saying such strange things. I kept my eyes closed and began to feel. My back was leaning against her chest and she had her arms around me, her voice light in my ear.
"Okay so...now I guess I'll teach you my favourite way to cook pasta" a smile pulled at my lips. Had she just been talking at me this entire time?
"Tell me when I can write it down..." I croaked at her, my voice was hoarse.
"Deal." She kissed my cheek softly, we rocked there on the ground for a while until the cold took over. Finally the fire was out. As the realisation hit my entire body relaxed.
"Wanna talk about it..." she suggested gently. I shook my head, not today, not yet."Bed time then? Or are you going to make me sleep on this cold hard ground?" It wasn't a question she was already pulling me to my feet before I could open my mouth.
"Sorry" I started but then words failed. Now it was her turn to shake her head as she turned me to face her. Nat brushed my cheek with her thumb before delicately kissing me.Her mouth was soft after first, long slow kisses. I felt safe, pressing my body into her more I wanted to be closer. I moaned quietly, as her hands snaked around my wait to hold me tight.
"Take me to bed Natasha" I sighed into her neck when the kiss finally broke.
"Anything for you baby" her soft words made a shiver run up my spine as she dropped her voice for only me to hear.
