"Dad?" Danny asked cautiously while walking into his father's office. The silence is deafening. He inches closer, peering around the door at his father's desk.
Danny notices right-away the office is wrecked, all his father's work is scattered everywhere, books knocked off the shelves. His father's laptop missing, along with his father's briefcase. Danny was too afraid to look around. Instead, he ran downstairs to his mom. Danny's mom just picked him up from school, during her lunch break. His father wouldn't be home for another two hours, around 5:30pm. Usually his moms lunch break is an hour and a half long so Danny's mom waits with him at home until the babysitter gets here to watch Danny until his father comes home. His mom and dad usually get off work at the same time, but his dad comes home first. Hence why Danny found it odd his father's office door was open in the first place.
He and his mom got home around 3:25pm.
- 2 Days Later -
Danny is sitting in the living room, on the couch. His mother requested he remain there until the "nice police men call".
Her phone rang in her purse while his mom is upstairs. Danny thought it'd best to answer it. He peeked up the stairs then rushed over to the kitchen counter. He read the caller ID, it was an unknown number.
"Hello?" Danny answered.
"Hi, is this Mrs. LocheHart?"
"No, I am her son. Is this important?" Danny responded.
"Well, you see son, son. Do you mind handing the phone off to your mom? It's the police." As the last of the words sunk into Danny's mind, he ran upstairs.
"Mom! Mooom!" He was yelling at the top step to the stairs. His mother came running in a panic.
"What is it, baby? Are you okay? Did you see someone?" She eagerly held her son against her, holding him close looking in every direction around him. In her mind, if anyone wanted her son, they would have to go through her first. He may be 13, but Danny is still her baby.
Danny held up the phone to his mom, "No mom, your phone. It's the police."
His mom hurriedly took the phone "Hello, may I ask who is this?" She walked away briskly to her bedroom.
Danny snuck up, listening by her door, anticipating the news..
He could tell it was bad news by the stifled crying. He could hear his mom trying to hold back. His mother doesn't cry often.
This is when each of them learned his father was no longer alive.Danny fell to his knees sobbing, crying out for his dad. His mom heard him and rushed over. Pulling him into her lap "It'll be okay, baby. It'll be okay. Mommy has you. You and I, always". His mom repeated these words as a mantra to get through this pain. Not just for Danny, but for herself, too. In her head, she was conflicted, confused. Heartbroken by this devastating news. Her husband, the love of her life, is died. She can't begin to process it.
Now she's left alone to take care of their son. Danny represented the love they shared together. Without his father, she had no idea how she was going to make it through this.
We'll have to see..
