Chapter 5>

Jack laughed as he dragged Rapunzel along the crowded grounds. Rapunzel muttered several 'sorry's to the people she bumped into, avoiding their glowering gazes.

"Where're we going Jack?" Rapunzel asked desperately, curiosity getting the best of her. Rapunzel and Jack were in a more empty area now, with only a few families and couples scattered around food stands and benches.

Jack grinned at the green-eyed girl. "You'll see."

"You have to at LEAST give me a hint," Rapunzel whined. Jack glanced at her pouting face.

"It's my favourite ride when I was a kid," the pale boy replied," we're almost there anyways. You're about to find out." Jack's pace changed into a mere jog. Curiosity was eating her inside. What ride were they going to?

Rapunzel was so engrossed in her thoughts that she did not realize the teen heading towards her. Rapunzel scrunched up her face at the contact of a navy t-shirt. "I'm so s-" The colour drained from her face. A face she never thought she'd see again was standing right in front of her, smoulder and all. No. It can't be.

"E-eugene," she stammered at the tall brunette in front of her. His disinterested look changed into a sly smirk.

"Why, hello Blondie," Eugene's voice dripped with fake happiness and sarcasm," It's SO nice to see you again."

Eugene unhooked his arm around the waist of a girl who Rapunzel hasn't noticed until now. A blond with eyes as cold as ice, a skin-tight dress two sizes to small for her and make-up heavy enough to fill up a whole make-up store. Eugene wrapped his arms and whispered loud enough for only the two to hear.

"Who's the jerk with a DATE now?" he hissed in her ear. Eugene peered at Jack. " But, I see that YOU'VE done some work too," he chuckled. Rapunzel gasped, blushing profusely.

Jack? And her? Dating? Eugene couldn't possibly think that! They were just friends, right? Eugene went back to his date's side, leaving Rapunzel standing, shocked and on the brink of tears. Eugene smirked," Nice seeing you again, Blondie. Hope to see each you real soon." Rapunzel made a quiet sqeaking sound before Eugene's date dragged him to a ride 'Love Tunnel'.

"Are you okay?" Jack asked, worry in his sapphire orbs.

"I'm alright." The blond whispered, blinking back tears," Let's just go to the ride."

Their journey to the still unknown ride for Rapunzel was silent. Rapunzel didn't bother to converse with Jack due to her Eugene-filled thoughts. When did he start dating again? How did he meet her? What does he see in her? Then again, Eugene was always the type to flirt with anyone that was borderline pretty.. But-

"Rapunzel! Here it is! My favourite ride when I was a kid!" Jack excaimed, gesturing to the massive wheel with many carriages constructed on the outer edge of the wheel. Rapunzel's heart fell to her stomach. Why did it have to be the ferris wheel? Couldn't have it been a roller coaster or a haunted house? If Rapunzel had known there was a ferris wheel in the local theme park, she would have denied Jack's offer.

The woman at the base of the ferris wheel took Jack's money and pointed to an unoccupied carriage where a couple just walked out. She woman closed the door after the two and the carriage started moving seconds later.

"Good thing there's no queue, huh," Jack said, turning to Rapunzel.

Jack's eyes, filled with worry, widened at the teary-eyed blond in front of him. Her breaths were uneven as she hiccuped every few seconds. Rapunzel grabbed herself tightly, clutching at her sleeves until her knuckles were white. Tear after tear fell from her light eyes, the salty taste dripping on her lips. "R-R-Rapunzel? W-What's Wrong?" Jack stuttered.

"R-Rapunzel? Rapunzel! What happened!"

"RAPUNZEL! RA-"

"EUGENE AND I USED TO RIDE THE FERRIS WHEEL ALL THE TIME WHEN WE WERE DATING!!" Rapunzel yelled at Jack, "HAPPY?!"

Jack was speechless. He didn't know who Eugene was, but he could connect the dots. He had a suspicion Eugene might be that guy Punzie bumped into earlier. Wait, since when did he nickname her 'Punzie'?

"Punz.. Rapunzel, is Eugene the guy you bumped into?" Jack asked slowly. Rapunzel made small, quick nods, confirming Jack's suspicion. "Look, I know I don't know you that much, but I can tell you aren't over him," the white-haired boy started, facing the lovely sunset picturesque landscape.

"I respect that, but you're better than him! That girl he was with... looks like a clown compared to you! Did you SEE how much make-up she was wearing?"

Rapunzel giggled. Jack felt compelled to wipe Rapunzel's tears from her eyes. And that's what he did. He stared into her bloodshot eyes, counting all the yellow and gold flecks in her lime irises. She's so beautiful, he coudn't help think.

Jack's eyes flickered to her thin, rosy lips, then to her eyes, then to her lips again. Temptation was getting the best of him. Jack leaned into Rapunzel's face, closer and closer until he was just centimeters from her face. And then...

Rapunzel broke away from his intense gaze, backing away from Jack.

"I-I-I can't. I-I just c-can't," Rapunzel said, overwhelmed.

At that moment, their carriage's door opened. A perfect timing for Rapunzel. "I-I have to go," Rapunzel turned to the doors. Jack grabbed her wrist, preventing her from leaving. Jack's sad blue eyes were practically pleading her to stay. Rapunzel wrenched away from his grasp. As much as she didn't want to say those words, she forced herself to. "I..I'm sorry."

Rapunzel tip-toed and gently pecked Jack's cheek. Jack's jaw tensed. Rapunzel took off, running towards the gigantic banner in the distance saying 'COME BACK SOON' in bold, red font.

Rapunzel glanced back. Jack's eyes were glued to the carriage's floor as she ran away, an expression of melachony never wavering.

Rapunzel gulped down the guilt lodged in her throat, racing towards the exit as fast as she could, whizzing past the few that decided to stay at the theme park at dusk. Her long, blond hair glowed a golden hue in the orange sun as she tried to escape from the bitterweet memories of what had been and what could have been.
