Remus swept the crystalized glass shards up from the living room floor. He turned on the fluorescent light and rested his elbow on the counter.

He heard a car  pull up into the drive way and bolted up stairs. Remus put his ear to his bedroom wall and listened.

Remus would do this every night. Listen.

React. And depending on the sound of the door closing, he would either stay in his room for the night, terrified, or he would help his mother into bed.

Remus's mom came home drunk almost all the time. It was something that didn't change over the years, as their house, amount of money and relationship often did.

One day Hope, his mom would yell and hit him. On another she would hug him and tell him she was still figuring everything out.

On the really bad days he would stay in his room all day, heart racing, palms sweaty, arms and legs twitchy. It was anxiety and cowardliness.

Because he was a werewolf. She would still blame him for his fathers death, how she could hold a grudge.

The door slammed. His breath caught, his heart pounded, his head throbbed.

He got up, went into the bathroom, and filled a cup with water. He then closed his door turned the light off and layed in his bed, still as a stick.

He heard the keys jangle in the lock and feet catch on each other. The door opened and he heard a bottle being clumsily set on the table.

He took a breath and squeezed his eyes shut. He counted to one hundred under his breath and tapped his finger on his thigh.

Hope walked up stairs tripping on one, she cursed. Remus held his breath.

He rubbed his sweaty ankles together to relieve anxiety, he turned on his side and sighed. Squeezing his eyes closed, he could only see white and rainbow speckles going around under his eyelids.

Remus heard Hope turn the water on and flush the tiolet, get into bed and stay quit. Remus blinked ten times until he exhaled.

 It was relieving.

Remus woke by an alarming buzzing noise coming down stairs. Did he leave the lights on all night?

He crept down stairs to find bread, butter, marmalade, and milk neatly laid out on the table. The cheap toaster oven made a dinging sound, cutting off the buzzing.

Remus looked around and spotted his mom smiling. Every morning after she would come home drunk would she make breakfast for Remus and herself.

She would plaster a fake smile and walk around humming to herself. The eggs she was frying were burning on the edges and she quickly turned the burner off, she wasn't the best cook.

Remus sheepishly smiled, hiding the awkwardness. He sat down and spread marmalade on his toast.

"Mum, how did you sleep?" He asked after one bite.

"As usual, I'm still trying to figure some things out but I found a job!" She turned around with no sparkle in her eyes.

Remus set down his toast and was going to ask his mom what job, but she said. "The diner, I know people there and they agreed I could work there until we figured things out".

He knew that by "figuring things out" she really meant she is completely lost and that she bribed her way into the job.

Remus walked over to the door
, opened it and looked at the mail. One of the Letters was addressed toLondon.

Remus Lupin
183, Southbury brownstone, london.
Third apartment up.

It was by Professor McGonagall,
Howarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Remus was wide eyed, he had never thought he would get a chance at going. Hope came over and glanced at it, she congratulated him and said they would go shopping the following Sunday.

Even though Hope was a muggle, by being married to a wizard she knew enough about the Wizarding world to know what dragon ally and hogwarts was.
