Chapter 18
Jesse shakes me awake gently. My eyes flutter open to him. His smile is so perfect as I look up at his beautiful face. "Hey, sleepy head," he says. I blush and say, "Hi." I always fall asleep around him.
I look around the room and notice we're in a cabin. The wooden logs that form the room reflect the dim light coming from the fireplace that sits across from the bed I'm laying in. I look out the window and see that it is evening, the sky still a gentle orange color and fireflies starting to come out of the depths of the dark forest that I assume surrounds the entire cabin.
I look back to Jesse and he smiles at me. "Want to go for a walk?" he asks me. "Sure, why not?" I reply with a smile. He takes my hands and helps me to my feet. I look around the place once more and say, "So where are we, exactly?"
"A cabin in the middle of the woods," he tells me. "Really?" I ask him, sarcasm in my tone. "Oh yea," he says, playing around. I smirk and say, "So why are we in a cabin in the woods?"
He shrugs and says, "I don't know. The city was getting kind of boring and I just wanted to be alone with my new wife." I smile and kiss him. When I pull away, he smiles and says, "All of our things are here. Your clothes are in the closet."
I smile and float towards the closet. I grab a pair of jeans and a white v-neck, along with some sneakers. I put my hair into a ponytail and smile at Jesse. He smiles at me and walks around the bed to me. His hands go to my hips and he pulls me close.
I look up into his beautiful silver eyes as he looks into my green ones, and I smile. He smiles back, but it wavers. I'm a little confused, but brush it off. Jesse releases me from his grip. He grabs my hand and says blankly, "Let's go." He grabs an oil lamp from on top of the dresser and we walk to the door.
He opens it and I step outside, trying to forget his change in attitude. The warm summer air floats around me, kissing my skin softly and filling me with peace. I turn around and Jesse closes the door. He smiles at me, and then his eyes flick behind me. He loses his smile.
"You okay?" I ask, concerned. He looks at me for a split second, and then he drops his gaze to the ground. "I'm sorry," I just barely hear him mumble. I furrow my brows and say, "Sorry? For wha-"
A single clap interrupts me, and I slowly turn around. My face instantly grows into a sneer. Guess who I find.
The man with the ice-blue eyes from the boardwalk is clapping with an evil smirk on his face. Behind him, twenty men wearing black suits and black sunglasses are standing in a semi-circle with their hands behind their backs. They look as if they belong in the FBI or something.
I turn back around to face Jesse, hoping he'll do something. He's still looking at the ground.
"What-"
"Hello, Karisa," the man says with that evil smile still plastered on his face. A bone-chilling tingle crawls its way up my back and I whip back around to face the man.
The man steps forward and says, "I've been dying to introduce myself to you." He walks up to me but I'm too stunned to do anything. It's as if I'm paralyzed, as well. I try to back up, but I simply can't, as if some force is holding me in my place.
He grins at me, his eyes almost too powerful to look into. He gently takes my right hand and folds it into his. He kisses my hand, his lips ice cold against my knuckles as he continues looking into my eyes. When his lips touch my skin, his eyes flash orange, almost too quick for me to even catch before they return to ice blue.
