📍hyogo theatreHALFWAY THROUGH THE MOVIE, atsumu shakes y/n, whose eyes are becoming heavy with sleep as her head rests softly on his left shoulder.
he's sure the pounding in his chest from his rapid heartbeat should have been enough to wake her up, but she drifts in and out of sleep anyways.
he pokes her side, in her tickle spot. atsumu chuckles as y/n shoots up straight, shaking her head to try and shake the sleep away while swatting at his hand. "movie's that boring, huh?" he quietly says.
she shakes her head, leaning it back onto her best friends shoulder, causing butterflies to erupt in his stomach. "hmm, i guess i didn't sleep great last night," she mumbles.
"are you okay? worried? stressed? anxious?" atsumu softly says into her ear, caressing her arm gently with his own left arm that's wrapped around her shoulders.
"no, no," she says sleepily. "it's just... weird... with mai gone. our—well, my—room feels so empty now."
L/N MAI. y/n's older sister, who's just moved away from hyogo to tokyo for her first year of university. y/n's best friend, other than atsumu. osamu's childhood (and possibly current) crush.
ATSUMU SIGHS SADLY. "how come you haven't told me you can't sleep?"
"tsumu, it's okay, it's only been a week without her, i'll get used to it."
"want me to stay over tonight?" he asks in a hushed voice.
"mmhmm, thanks tsum tsum, that would be great."
"anything for you."
BACK AT HOME, atsumu is downstairs in the kitchen while y/n waits for him. she sits on the edge of her full-sized bed, which rests underneath her sister's bunked twin bed that is built overtop the headboard of her own.
the sheets and blankets are stripped off of the top mattress, leaving it bare. the left side of the room is empty, the photo frames, furniture, and decorations that were once there are now probably packed up somewhere in her sister's dorm.
her sister's string lights that were so carefully hung from her top bunk are now gone, and y/n sighs, remembering all the times her sister sat across from her on the bottom bed under those lights and helped her through her problems.
her sister was the only person who y/n could feel comfortable around other than atsumu, and, somewhat, osamu and suna.
OSAMU AND SUNA are the other half of the quartet along with atsumu and y/n. occasionally it would be a quintet, when mai would come along, but for the most part it's just the four best friends who hang out together.
of course, osamu and suna are closer with each other in the same way as atsumu and y/n—well, aside from the part where one is in love with the other.
ATSUMU WALKS INTO Y/N'S ROOM with two bowls overflowing with popcorn.
"heya! are we playin' minecraft?" he asks, handing her one. he notices a pained expression on her face as she tears her eyes away from her sister's half of the room.
"sure!" y/n says, trying to sound enthusiastic, but atsumu can see right through her act.
"ya know what, i think i have a better idea. why don't we rearrange your room? we can make it feel less empty since all your stuff is cluttered to one side and the other one is so empty!"
the girl looks up at her beaming best friend, tears welling in her eyes. it's not because of missing her sister, but because she's so grateful for him.
"hey, don't cry! we don't have to if you don't want to," he says, sitting next to her and wrapping his arm around her. she leans her head on his shoulder once again, and he only hopes she can't hear how fast his heart is beating.
she sniffles softly. "no, tsumu, it's not that, it's
just-" she sighs, pausing to find her words. "i am so lucky to have you."her words put a smile on his face as he flushes red. he wipes a stray tear from her cheek and lets out a shaky breath, before saying, "i'm so lucky i have you too."
