When friends encouraged her to install a dating app, Soojin thought it was their typical joke.
Soojin called Minnie late at night complaining about how lonely she was.
The pub where she tended to spend most of her spare time — although it opened only two weeks ago — was quiet compared to other. There were no wasted guys flirting with every seems-to-be-female figure or too loud music. Just as nice as a pub ever could be.
“So,” the girl said sleepily yawning into dynamic of her phone, “what you gonna do about it?”
Soojin felt guilty, when she grasped Miyeon's voice addressed to Minnie, with whom she was currently on call. However, obviously not guilty enough to stop whining about her being single.
“I don't know, Min. I'm a perfect date, really!”
“Yeah.”
Bartender — bartendress, actually — played her eyebrows and offered to make a cocktail silently. Soojin shook her head in a mute “no” followed by a polite smile.
“I have a well-paid job, nice personality and am fucking beautiful.” She continued.
“Of course.”
“At least my cooking skills are attractive, after all!”
“You are.” It seemed like Minnie was randomly answering in the last effort to stay awake.
Miyeon was persistently clinging to her, that made it even harder to concentrate on Soojin's speach.Soojin sobbed into a call. “You haven't even been listening.”
She heard a quiet “gimme the phone, babe” before Miyeon's voice sounded loud enough to stop being mixed with Soojin's sniveling and subdued background music.
“Hey, sweetheart. I'm just- maybe you should stop waiting for someone to talk to you and make a first step?”
“But why don't they try to get to know me? Am I dressing up weirdly or what?” Soojin laid her cheek on the bar not quite listening to Miyeon.
“Stop, Soo. Your style is nice, thought you might seem cold-”
“I'm not!” She said too loud waking up suddenly, so some people turned to her.
“-and totally straight.”
Soojin glanced at her empty glass with black expression on her face and twiddled it aimlessly.
“And also your relaxed face might seem to be a bitch face.” Miyeon added matter-of-factly.
“But-”
“Try being more friendly and open to people in real life or just create a form on some acquaintance site.”
“Yeah, Soo,” Minnie said taking the phone again. “Try something like this. Lisa recommended me Tinder some day, by the way. It seems she got a girl there.”
“Why would she recommend you such app, Kim Minnie?” was the last thing that Soojin heard before their call ended.
“They are so taken,” She groaned as her head fell on her hands. “Fuck, I'm pathetic.”
The bartender looked at her gently while cleaning a glass with soft at a sight tissue.
“You dress up like a model every time I see you here, don't underrate yourself!” She said smiling at Soojin.
“Thanks...” Soojin ceased talking and squinted in attempt of seeing the name tag on bartender's chest.
“Shuhua.” The young woman said wiping another glass.
“Shuhua.” Soojin repeated. “I'm Soojin.”
“So would you like a drink or a talk, Soojin?”
“Both would be the best option, actually.” Soojin said grinning tiredly. The bartender was as nice as the pub in general.
“I'll make you my best one.” Shuhua winked at Soojin starting to pour liquor in.
Soojin rolled her eyes.
“So did you know that the green stars do exist? That's amazing!” The bartender glared at her excitedly as she continued to talk random nothings.
Soojin downloaded the app right away when she got home.
