Chapter 19

All of us leaned forward until we had a clear view of the attacker, which upon first look didn't really seem like a threat. The creature was tall with long limbs dragging softly on the ground. Its skin is rock-like and cracked with dead plants and moss covering half of its body. It honestly looked like a really tall gollum from that old game... what was its name? Oh, Minecraft! The most unnerving part though was its eyes, they were hollow and completely devoid of life.
Shiro maneuvered Black up and into the sky, high enough to be out of the creature's attacks, but still low enough for it to be visible.

"What is that?" Shiro questioned, turning to Luna, who was still looking confusingly out the window.
"It's the Guardian or Ceidwad ... it's an ancient being who protects Vaskel, but they never attack unprovoked and are relatively peaceful... something must be wrong."
Shiro took off towards the other lions, "Alright here's the plan, I'm going to drop you all off at your lions, Luna will stay with me. Once you get to your lions, regroup above, we'll figure out what's wrong and if there's any way to help it. Got it?"
"Yes Sir!"
                                    - - -
When Shiro said drop off, he quite literally meant drop off.
I braced myself for impact using the jet pack to slow my descent, rolling out to avoid injury, out of the corner of my eye I saw Keith do the same, rather gracefully. Hunk and Pidge on the other hand... not so graceful. Once the shock was out of our bones we took off towards our lions, the sounds of battle growing louder behind us.
Keith was the first to his lion, taking off immediately to help Shiro, the three of us not far behind him. Once all lions were air born, Shiro pulled back, flying higher into the atmosphere and away from the Ceidwad.

"I believe I know what's wrong", Luna begins gaining our attention, " Ceidwad is a sentient part of Vaskel, of the planet. It's very essence comes from the planets quintessence. When the quintessence would run low my people would replenish it with our own... however due to... events, no one was able to help the planet heal from the invasion of the Galra; it's run dry and with it, the very soul of this poor creature."

That explains why Blue couldn't pick it up on her scanner...

I'm hurt that you believe I would lie to you

Sorry Blue....

"So it's basically a walking corpse?" Pidge asks, dodging out of the path of a boulder.
" Yes, without its soul, Ceidwad can not function, it doesn't know friend from foe and will attack anything...". The sad look had returned to Luna's eyes. She was clearly distressed, the want to save the creature, the only thing from her home other then herself, and the knowledge that she can't. The amount of quintessence needed was far to high to ever be achievable.
"So what do we do?" Hunk speaks nervously, watching the creature tear apart anything and anything in its path to throw at the group.
"Maybe we can use the castle-"
"Oh! And power it-"
"Would it be enough-"
"No"
Luna's P.O.V
"No"
It had always been a simple answer, one you would give without a second thought and as the paladins questioned it, I realized that it wasn't simple at all. In fact is was complicated and possibly the heaviest decision I've ever had to make. I desperately wanted to save the Ceidwad, it had severed my people well and it deserved a life of rest, but.... I couldn't. I couldn't give it that life, no matter what I did, no one could. My planet... my people were long gone and it was never coming back, no matter what anyone did. I meet Lance's eyes and could see the understanding in them. That unwavering understanding and support that always surround him, and was given freely no matter how much I would warn him not too. I was glad for it, for without it I would never be able to make the right decision.
"There is nothing you or I can do. The only option we have to stop it's torment, is to leave."
The Paladins respected my decision and moved away and towards the castle, I could feel my quintessence reaching out for the creature's driven by my needed to protect. The Ceidwad let out one last cry, the noise being drowned out by the distant, but the weight of it carrying through. And I broke, the tears which held on at the corners of my eyes fell over, and my heart ached, crying along with the creature, my head screaming at me to turn back to help, to do anything.... Yet I did nothing, only watching as my planet get smaller and smaller.

All was silent, not a word was spoken as we made the way back to the Paladins castle, I was grateful for it.
The introduction and reunion was a blur to me and before I know it, everyone was asleep. All except for me. I looked out the windows of the observation deck, and gazed into the stars and the vast, empty universe. I sat there replaying the days events and the ones from 10,ooo years past, an unsettling feeling started to arise and after a few more moments I realized what it was....
... it was loneliness.

Finally the long awaited chapter is finished!!!! I sincerely apologize not updating this fanfic. I really have no excuse other then life happens.... I hope you enjoy this part and I will try my best to update it a lot more often then I have in the past. I'm also still in the process of revisiting previous chapters to fix mistakes; I'm a little less then halfway done with that.
ALSO! Here is a colored sketch of Luna. Her design have changed a lot since I first drew her. I added this in because I never really explain what she looked like and personally it's easier to look at a drawing then read a description.
