CHAPTER 6
No String-PEYTON-
For some reason, Evie gave off a weird vibe. The way she talked, the way she walked and moved around is just weird to me. Perhaps the vibe you get while watching "Mean Girls," or, "Clueless." My parents made me watch them a lot for some reason. I hated those movies.
Evie was good at making friends. It seems like she caught Aaron up in her web. It was obvious she was seeking his attention. Well, maybe I can only see that since I can see someone's string. The red thread of love, to be exact. Of course, the string is something I'm only able to see. The thread has appeared between them. It indicates that they could "possibly" be each other's soulmates.
Evie was pretty annoyed by Nellise though I don't think she did anything wrong. Nell was just misunderstood. She must've experienced something that changed her. We don't know her. She's a mystery.
I woke up to the sound of shoveling snow outside. Our dorm door swung open as we saw Mrs. Hanteri wearing clothes for the cold.
"Rise and shine, babes. If you wanna train today, help shovel up the snow. Breakfast is on the table and after that you better get ready to dig up some snow." She said cheerily. I heard various annoyed groans and shuffling sheets. Mrs. Hanteri shut the door and walked away.
"It's so early." I heard Lucas's voice say.
"Yeah, it is." Avikas yawned.
I sat up on my bed and started climbing down the ladder that was attached to my bunk bed. I then heard the door open then shut again. I looked around to see who left. Nellise's bed was empty. I cracked the door open at first then pushed it open all the way. I saw Nellise who sat at the table criss-cross applesauce on her chair. Her hair was nappy and tangled.
Mr. Avek soon came in and saw Nell sitting and eating at the table. I backed up into the room to see what was going to happen. I saw him walk over to Nell and ruffle her hair.
"Hey, what are you eating?" he questioned.
"I don't know, a type of watery chunky substance," Nell replied.
"I think that's oatmeal," He raised an eyebrow.
"Oatmeal?"
"Yeah, it's oats mixed with water. Of course, there is seasoning on the oats to make it taste better."
"Oh. ok."
Mr. Avek looked down at Nell's hair. He went through a corridor and came back a few minutes later with a brush and an untangling spray.
"Your hair is messy. I'm going to brush it, okay?" Mr. Avek told Nell.
She nodded in silence. Mr. Avek sprayed her hair a little bit and began brushing through it. The bristles went through her hair quite nicely and he didn't seem to have a rough time trying to get the brush through her hair. Her hair ended up smooth and silky.
"There you are." He said.
"Thank you." Nell responded.
To be honest, It looked as if Mr. Avek was like a fatherly figure to Nell. I mean, he was old enough to be her father but they have no relation to each other, at least I think.
"Make sure you change to go outside. It's pretty cold. Mrs. Hanteri told me she added some clothes to your drawer. I'll see you in a little bit." Mr. Avek told Nellise as he walked away.
I soon walked out right as Mr. Avek walked out the front door. I pulled out a chair as I held a bowl of oatmeal in my hand.
"So uhm, Nellise-"
"Yes?" She said, cutting me off.
"How'd you get here? Where are your parents?" I asked.
"Parents? I have no parents," She muttered.
"Oh, I'm sorry-"
"And the Man with Orange hair carried me here. That's how I got here."
"You do know his name is Mr. Avek, right?" I asked her.
"No. I didn't," She replied.
"Oh, well now you know."
"Thank you."
I ate my oatmeal peacefully until it was all gone. Nellise had already finished her oatmeal so she decided to go back to the dorm to go change. I went back into the dorm while everyone left with their weather gear. I finished changing after and saw everyone tripping on the ice outside.
"Help me up, idiots!" I heard Falkor yell out from outside.
"Everyone okay?" Mrs. Hanteri asked, trying to help everyone up. Mrs. Hanteri rubbed the back of her head.
In the corner of my eye, I saw Hendrix sitting in a corner with his back turned against us. He had his headphones in because I could see the wires coming out of his hair.
"So, clearly we can't walk or shovel the snow." Mr. Avek said while rubbing his eyes, tiredly. I turned to Nellise who wore her usual ripped sweater under a big baggy sweater. She had new bandages wrapped around her neck, arms, and wrists. The bandages that hung back behind her were tied into a bow. Nellise walked over to Aaron who sat on the floor with his hands in his pockets. Nellise grabbed his wrists and lifted him upwards. Aaron yanked his hands away from Nell but she grabbed them back and interlocked their hands. Aaron's face turned red. I saw that everyone was staring, including Evie. Evie's eyebrows burrowed. No one said anything, they just stared. Nellise then unlocked their hands and ran into a clear area behind the house. She came back and ran over to Mrs. Hanteri, Interlocked fingers with her then ran away behind the house. Nellise then came back with ice on her feet. She skated over to us while having some difficulty.
"Wait- how'd you do that?" I asked. Nellise shrugged and began to skate over to a pile of snow.
"Can you help us do that?" Avikas asked. Nellise nodded.
We all followed Nellise to a clear place with no snow. Nellise then grabbed Aarons hands again, interlocking them. She unlocked one of her hands and saw a strand of hair in his face. She put the hair behind his ear and left him red-faced.
Nellise then inhaled deeply then placed her hands on the ice, melting it away. She then did the same to Mrs. Hanteri. Nellise then began to control the melted ice, creating it into an ice skating heel attaching it to Evie's shoe. Evie quickly fell on her bottom with her legs outstretched. Nellise made another and attached it to her shoe. Everyone stared in awe. She continued to do this for everyone. Everyone got the hang of it. Including me. I saw from the corner of my eye where I saw Nellise fall backward... into Aaron's arms. I then used my powers to see if their thread was attached. Surprisingly, Nell had no string. She had no soulmate.
