The Memory Box

“Breathe! Allora…Come on, breathe” a faint, distant voice was repeating over and over. I tried to answer, but nothing was responding. I wasn’t in control of my body anymore. Darkness began to creep back. “BREATHE” the voice shouted. Then with a small sob, the voice pleaded again. “come on please... Breathe!” Feeling a brush of air on my face I tried to move. Still I couldn’t, but I could feel something else now … I could feel his arms around me and the cold floor on my back. I felt his tears fall on my cheek. He was leaning down now, his mouth right next to my ear and in a soft voice he whispered… “I love you.”

I gasped, as air filled my lunges and with all my strength fought to reply, but only a groan escaped and my eyes were still refusing to open. Gently a hand touched my face, tenderly pulling up my chin. Sudden warmth covered my mouth and my eyes flickered open. Jason was looking down at me. There were tears in his eyes, and a relieved smile on his lips. Did we just kiss? My mind immediately questioned itself: B-but he’s being controlled… Did he just kiss me? He’s back! I can see it in his eyes. It’s him… the real him… B-but how?

No matter how it was possible, my heart leaped with joy. I weakly lifted my hand to his face and pulled him down. We kissed again, until I pulled back and gazed into his sea blue eyes… “Yes,” I whispered with a croaky voice and he seemed to know the question I was answering... We smiled at each other, as he pulled a small box from his pocket and opened it slowly. A small dainty diamond sparkled gleefully, delicately held in its golden band. “It’s beautiful” I whispered. Our smiles grew into ecstatic laughter and I hugged him with tears in my eyes.

“Sorry to interrupt…” Breaking our hug, we looked up. The Doctor stood in front of us. An urgent, but awkward look on his face: “Jason, you um… have 5 minutes left.”

“5 minutes? What do you mean…5 minutes?” I asked alarmed. Quickly looking around I realized we were still in the same room but the angels were nowhere to be seen. My eyes come to rest on the Doctor, “Explain yourself, Doctor” I demanded, “what do you mean 5 minutes?” Suddenly red lights started flashing everywhere. I watched as they went whizzing and whirling around the walls of the room before slamming into the big machine. It was now glowing red not green. Slowly I swivelled back towards the Doctor…“What… did you do?”

For an instant he stared blankly at me, before hurriedly explaining: “I reversed the machines plurality and turned it on. With no one inside it will keep building power, until it… well, explodes. And um… I used the vortex manipulator, locked onto all the stone in this room and transported it out.” He smiled brightly while straightening his bowtie with satisfaction. “But…,” He quickly continued, as Jason slowly helped me to my feet, “that’s not why we only have 5… 3 and a half minutes. Allora, there’s no time to explain everything. This is step 5… remember? Jason’s back for now, but he’s fading fast. If that angel takes over again, he’ll be lost forever…”

“What?” I yelled in disbelief, “Doctor! You have to do something!”

He shook his head sadly, “There’s nothing I can do… Only you can save him now.”

“How?” I asked urgently.

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t know!”

“I’m sorry,” Jason’s voice cut through our rambling. I turned to see tears, welling up in his eyes. A wave of sadness filled his face as he tenderly kissed my hand and fighting to stay in control, gently placed the ring on my finger.

“No, no, no…” I yelled, “I refuse to let you give up,” Fighting against tears I pulled my hand away and cupping his face almost sobbing: “W-We can get through this.” But I couldn’t keep the despair out of my voice. We just stood, looking into each other’s eyes, defeated… there was nothing we could do… the angel was unrelenting…. It will never give up… Suddenly anger filled me. I was not going to let Jason go without a fight. Staring deeply into his eyes I firmly stated, “We just have to figure it out… you’re not going anywhere! Do you hear me?”
