I opened my eyes to find the familiar surroundings of the swamp. It had been 3 years since Toph had died. She had raised me since I was a little girl; something I would always be grateful for. After my parents died, I didn't have anywhere else to go.
They died in a fire. I can remember that. I can't remember their faces though. I was hiding in the closet and I could only see them through the small crack in the door. There were two men standing over them, watching.
The last thing I can remember is seeing their lifeless bodies laying on the floor. I can't remember my village or how my parents looked or even if I had any siblings.
Toph told me she had found me unconscious in the middle of the desert. She had been traveling and was headed back to the swamp. Deciding to take me in was something she thought would make her time useful. And yet despite that, she treated me like one of her own.
---Presently---
I brushed the dirt off my pants and struggled to pull the stray leaves out of my hair. Then I made my way over to a small cave only a few feet away with a towel, my special clothes, and my handmade soap.
I squeezed in the cave through a small opening on the side; my wide hips making it difficult to just walk inside.
As I bathed in the warm cave water, I pondered over countless things. I thought a lot about what I was about to do.
After I finished washing my hair, I got dressed in my "special" clothes that I had been saving. Then I packed my bag with supplies. Dried food, water bottles, socks, undergarments, a small hunting knife, medical herbs, bandages, energy tablets, extra clothes, a brush, and lastly a small blanket.
"Okay." I said as I turned to look in the only mirror I had hanging on a tree limb.
I wore the metal clan's robes while metal plates lined my neck and arms. Toph had saved them for me, telling me that when I was 16 I would need to got to Zaofu and request to see Suyin Beifong. She hadn't explained to me why, but said Suyin would understand why I was sent there. I had no idea why I had to go to Zaofu, but I trusted Toph.
I brushed out my hair and picked up my bag. After digging through it for a minute I found the map I needed in order to locate where Zaofu was. Glancing back one last time at my home, I carried on.
