chapter 9
their falloff
——Seonghwa was startled awake.
He swiftly, but violently, came back to his senses. Some nightmare with a fire burning him alive had made him freeze on the spot. He woke up within seconds from the overstimulation and fear with the sounds of screams still ringing in his ears.
He felt around his face to confirm his real existence and not some "dream within in a dream" nonsense, finally feeling the sweat and grime that had his slicked-back hair now strung to his forehead. He felt so, so hot, almost to the point of feverish. The more he calmed himself, the easier it was for the horrid dream to pass and be long forgotten.
Rubbing the remainder of fatigue from his eyes, he finally absorbed his surroundings.
Musty brown furniture with lots of scratches and markings. Fading off-white wallpaper. No mirrors, but one small window in the corner.
Hongjoong's place.
He grimaced slightly, but he couldn't deny the adrenaline buzzing under his skin. He soaked up that raw emotion, basking in the pride of accomplishing the goal that he planned out for an entire year. He was finally able to move onto the next step - meeting the pirate captain.
Seonghwa briefly yawned, flinging the now-sweaty blanket from his body and onto the other couch. His muscles were quite tense and his back popped in more ways than he ever imagined were possible. Despite the conditions, he kept telling himself that he had to get used to it. There was no going back.
He started brushing his messed-up hair back with his fingers, gently combing through the somewhat greasy strands.
However, at the tips of his fingertips, something lingered. Something abnormal but familiar. Some ghost feeling of an object sitting on his head. Despite mere air just sitting atop his head, Hwa could feel the worn texture of some type of wool brush against his fingertips. He could feel it there. A hat.
His heart dropped.
He knew the feeling. He was certainly quite familiar with it. It haunted him for the past couple of months - who could forget it.
A mirror. He desperately needed a mirror.
Stones and rocks filled his gut. There was only a good or bad meaning to the unnatural phenomena, and from not seeing the mysterious...person/thing(?)...for at least a week now, Seonghwa hoped for the positive.
He clambered to the door, flinging it open in a rush. He briefly remembered the layout of the place from when he and Hongjoong had first entered the night prior. He didn't remember seeing any mirrors, however.
He brought his hand up to his neck, not failing to notice the ghostly feeling of cold metal rubbing against the tips of his fingers. A prominent shiver ran down his spine as he picked up his pace, struggling to find a mirror. He needed one now.
