sides

It was something Robert had noticed Andy did, but never knew how to bring it up. When Robert left the bed in the mornings,  Andy took his side.

At first, he thought it was just her liking the space, taking the whole bed like a giant starfish, but sometimes she just rolled over to his side or change their pillows when she thought he wasn't looking.

Andy liked to drink her coffee in bed and she always did it on Robert's side.

Actually, whatever she did in bed in the mornings she did it on his side.

It was intriguing to Robert. Why was she doing it?

“Is something wrong with your pillow?” he asked on night Andy shrugged and kept her head buried in the pillows.

And then Robert asked if Andy wanted to exchange sides, or something, and she only frowned.

“Do you?” she asked and it was Roberts turn to shrug.

They tried sleeping on different sides of the bed that night, but it didn't feel right and Andy still took Roberts side in the morning.

It didn't make any sense.

So that's why, one morning, Robert decided to finally ask about it.

“What is it?” Andy asked, not glancing up from the phone in her hand. (On his side of the bed, of course.)

he didn't know how to actually form the question.
“You always take my side of the bed the minute I leave,” he blurted out. “Why?”

she frowned slightly. “Do I?”

“You do,” Robert confirmed.

She bit her lip, clearly trying to find a perfect way to say whatever she was about to say. Robert waited, leaning on the doorframe.

“I guess I just-,” a slight pause, “like it?”

He still didn't understand. “Like what?”

Andy blushed, she actually blushed.

“Your pillow smells like you,” she cleared her
throat, “and I like it.”

Oh.

Oh.

That explained a thing or two.

“It’s just nice to still- feel you around me when you're not in here, with me?” Andy offered, sounding unsure of herself. “I haven't really thought about it.”

But now it made sense, in every possible way. And Robert absolutely loved it. He loved the idea of her missing him the minute he rolled out of the bed.

“It gets cold after you get up,” Andy kept talking, “and your side feels warmer. It feels safe, like you.”

The way she just said all of that, like it wasn't a big deal, like she literally hadn't given it a thought before. It makes Robert just stare at her, little dumbfounded. He's married the most adorable woman in the universe.

“Does it bother you?” Andy then asked, uncertainly. “I can stop.”

No,” he breathed out, “No, it definitely doesn't bother me.”

“Good,” Andy said, then repeated firmly with a big smile,  “good.”

He had a massive urge to kiss her.

“I love you,” he said instead grinning back at her.

She looked half-amused and half-adoring while answering, “I love you, too. Now come back to bed and kiss me already.”

And how could he possibly say no to that.
