Narrator POV

The sun slowly peaked over the horizon flooding the valley with warm light. It shined on the surface of the ocean and the river. The river ran into the lake that sat at the bottom of the valley. A large forest surrounded the lake hiding it from the sun for a while longer. It was getting to be the middle of autumn and most of the leaves on the trees had turned beautiful shades of orange, red and yellow.

A slight breeze blew across the lake, sending small ripples across the water. Most of the fish had left the lake due to the colder weather, leaving via the several smaller streams that flowed out of the lake. The only creatures that stayed in the lake were the mermaids that lived there. Well the two that lived there. Plenty of there family and friends would visit often but they all lived in the ocean near the valley. During the colder months they would move to the springs in the mountain. But due to more human activity around the lake and river this annual trip to the springs became more difficult.

For hundreds of years there have been rumors and stories about the sea monsters that live in the area. It wasn't uncommon for people to come to the lake and search for the creatures. Some people even try to hunt them. Though none have ever been caught.

There had even been a few bounties put out for the capture of one of the sea monsters. Some people have built cabins in the surrounding woods and mountains, most of which are for people who stay and fish during the summer. The lake was a decent size though not huge. But there were an abundance of underwater caves deep in the lake and mountains. The springs were hidden away in a series of caverns in a mountain that was right next to the shore of the ocean. No humans had ever found the springs, and none ever will. The caverns were filled with magic crystals that protected the mermaids and made it impossible for any human to ever find the springs.

The caves in the lake also had these magic crystals though in a much smaller amount. The crystals would glow in the dark and provide a comforting light to whoever needed it. The two mermaids that live in the lake, Russia and America, had lived there together for a few years. They had almost every cave and cavern in the lake memorized. So anytime family or friends would visit they could always count on them to keep them from getting lost. All mermaids were born and grew up in the area, they just stayed mostly in the ocean. When Russia and America had become partners they decided to move to the lake permanently, they just thought it was a nice place that they could mostly have to themselves.

But that's enough exposition, back to the story.

The two slept together in a cave deep in the lake. Russia was holding America in his arms, America had his arms wrapped around his chest. They layed in a bed of seaweed sleeping peacefully.

Russia's POV

I blinked my eyes open as the soft light from one of the crystals woke me up. That was the odd yet somewhat convenient thing about the crystals, they seemed to know when it was day or night and the color would change accordingly. Brighter warm colors for day and deeper cool colors for night.

I look up at the pinkish orange crystal and start to sit up. I feel Ame squeeze me tight in protest.

"Mmmm... no its... to earlyy..."

He mumbled and buried his face in my chest, turning away from the glow of the crystal.

"But we have hunting to do, we need to gather enough food for the springs before all the fish leave for winter."

He let's out a tired groan.

"But your so warm... five more minutes."

I smile at his morning ritual of asking for five more minutes.
