Six middle school girls played together on the local basketball court one weekend afternoon. It was a three-on-three game where they counted their scores in the beginning, until they lost track of how much each team got within the last hour. Team one had Eri, Kristen, and Misaka, while team two had Reina, Sayuka, and Harumi.
Harumi was point guard and swiftly passed the ball to Sayuka, who gracefully sent the ball flying into a three-pointer. Kristen defended her team's net by slapping the basketball out of Reina's hand before making a layup. Countering her opponent, Reina stole the ball right out of Misaka's hands before she could pass to Eri. Once Reina finished her layup a second time, Misaka passed the ball to Kristen, who immediately passed the ball right to Eri. Sayuka was on defense and in front of Eri, while Reina tried to protect the net. Eri took a step back before pushing forward and bouncing the ball between Sayuka's legs, passing her quickly, Reaching for the ball again, she dribbled to the net, with Reina defending it. Eri then passed to Kristen, without looking at her, turning Reina's attention to the other girl. However, Kristen passed the ball right back to Eri with a harder push. Catching the ball, Eri jumped forward towards the net for a swoop shot before Reina's hands reached the flying ball.
Two hours of playing later and the girls were exhausted. They rested on the benches of the court, drinking water and eating fruit.
"I can't believe we'll be in our third year of middle school," Sayuka said.
She was stretching her legs while Misaka watched her form, gobbling one of her apples already and digging in her bag for another one.
"I know it's so crazy. We're literally going to rule the school now," said Reina, sipping her water. "Hopefully we can get more recruits before we leave this year."
"I hope we can keep the legacy going for our club. I wouldn't mind a couple first years and teaching them the basics of basketball," Harumi said.
"What's surprising is when we signed up again, it was only the six of us, and no new players. I thought girls liked basketball," Eri said, trying to spin the basketball on her finger.
"It would be easier for us, since we did win our tournaments two times already, but maybe if they learned that one of the players was the daughter of a soon to be NBA player-"
"I don't think marketing my family name is going to do anything for us," Eri cut Reina off.
"It might, what do you think Kristen? He's your dad too."
"Right, Eri is she," Kristen said in her broken Japanese language.
"Exactly, thank you Kristen," Reina smiled, "See, she agrees with me."
"She did not agree with you, estúpido." Eri said, rolling her eyes.
"I'm so proud of you, Eri. You're using Spanish terms in the real world. I'm a successful teacher," Reina said, wiping a fake tear away from her eye.
Misaka placed the apple in her mouth and bit it, walking over to Kristen who drank her water. Sitting next to her, she whispered:
"It's just, 'I agree with Eri', when you're speaking Japanese."
Kristen thought about it for a moment before repeating, "I agree with Eri."
"Perfect, you'll get the hang of it," Misaka said.
"Bravo, Kristen! You'll be speaking perfect Japanese in no time!" Harumi cheered.
"Harumi, speak French for me. Say something fancy," Sayuka requested.
"You're weird," Reina said.
"I am not. I just love hearing her speak French. Please, Harumi?" Sayuka begged.
