Neji Week day 6
July 06, 2021
Prompt: The Last (?)
~
War, a memory that at times felt distant and that everyone wanted to be able to erase completely to continue their lives. Or at least the naive dreamed of something like that, not him.
Or not quite, not because his life had not completely changed just before the outcome of the war, but because he knew it was completely absurd to think such things.
Neji rolled his eyes in his mind as he listened to the elders of the council give the new instructions for the family and the changes to be implemented given the casualties they had suffered.
The first and most important had been the patriarch, Hiashi had stood in the way of the stakes falling from the sky to save Naruto and Hinata, he had saved them but unfortunately that meant his death. A sacrifice that was not in vain and without which they would not have been able to win the war, but that did not mean that his death would not bring big changes.
The elders of the board had appointed him temporarily to the position, not for nothing did he have the title of genius. It was a difficult and demanding job while he was catching up with what was expected of him in that position, and also while they finished training Hanabi to succeed him later.
Hiashi had not been the only member of the family who died during the war, all the families in the village had lost several members and they were no exception. That was why part of his work was to define how the tasks would be distributed inside the grounds to compensate for the losses.
He would not lie, Neji preferred to be an active shinobi than the mostly bureaucratic tasks that now sheltered him and that took quite a lot of his time, keeping him from even going to training. He took a deep breath, with any luck it would be no longer and he would already hand over the clan leadership to his younger cousin, returning to his normal life.
He had managed a couple of times to get out to the village and visit his sensei in the hospital where he was recovering from injuries sustained from his fight against Madara, Rock Lee never left his side no matter how much Gai told him that it was a waste of his youth to be in the hospital all the time. With Tenten he had met a couple of times, the brunette was working along with some scouting teams and was often out of Konoha.
The first year passed, and then the second. Hanabi continued her training and the council had already announced that she would take the patriarch's place, in other words his place, as soon as she turned off majority which meant that he had five years left in that position. There was not even any point in complaining or lamenting about it, just be patient.

Hinata's wedding was what was occupying everyone's agenda at the moment, finally after all those years she was going to marry the Uzumaki and Neji, neither as his cousin nor the clan leader was not going to object to such marriage. He knew that Hinata had always been interested in Naruto and he after the war reciprocated her. The council didn't have much of a say either, he was the world' savior and probably the next Hokage, so there was no impediment.
Tenten went to the grounds and had tea together while he listened to her complain about the issue of the wedding gifts and Kakashi's order to deliver them in advance. An order that of course did not apply to him, in fact he was the one who would deliver Hinata at the altar. But as he listened to the brunette talking in his mind, he was thinking about a topic that had started to haunt him since the marriage was announced.
