His hand pressed against my thigh, and I could feel the desire and the avarice permeate my skin.
"Who was he?" he asked, his tone low. From anyone else, it would be merely a forced but friendly conversation starter. From Liam, it was the final lifeline of the million dollar question.

"Just a boy," I replied, keeping my voice casual but evasive. I tilted my head downward so that I had to look up at him from beneath my eyelids. "He's nothing to me, Liam."

Although his palm was simply resting on my thigh, the slightest pressure from his fingers confirmed what I already knew: that Liam was jealous of one of his own employees. And not just jealous, but surprised at his own jealousy. Perhaps even disgusted. He, Liam Payne, Esquire, founder and namesake of Payne Investment Associates, envious of a gangly, novice law clerk who had more experience making coffee runs than reading case law.

It wasn't my fault, really. My aunt had introduced us at her garden party on the Upper East Side, bathing in her socialite status as she sucked down another mojito. I had been awestruck, at first; Liam was all man, not like the guys at law school who tried so hard to set themselves apart but only succeeded in being as bland as the textbooks they devoured. With his crisp, well-fitted suit, Mr. Payne stood out among my aunt's guests. Of course I would work my familial connections into a position at Payne & Associates. And from the way he glanced at me throughout the mixer, I suspected it would be easy.

Our relationship had begun four months ago, but it wasn't something he, nor I, wanted to advertise. I was just beginning my career; what if this discolored all my future opportunities? And he, surely, wasn't allowed to dabble in his own apprentice pool. It was all a secret. And just in our last meeting, he had all but told me to let myself be seen with other men to deter others from picking up our trail. "Preventative measures," he had so delicately called it.
So I did, although I hadn't exactly intended for Liam himself to walk in on Gordon and me in the case room. Gordon was mortified, and I thought I had played the part with equal humiliation.

I had thought Liam was merely acting his anger and annoyance at two lascivious young pencil pushers who should have been working instead of fraternizing, but the hand resting against my thigh told another story.

"Who was he?" Liam repeated. His tone didn't change, but that simply confirmed the alarming proximity to his temper. I dropped my ambiguity and raised my chin to meet his gaze.

"His name is Gordon. He's twenty-three and acts every bit of it, Liam. He's nothing to me."
He didn't say anything for what felt like the longest time, and then he crossed one leg over the other, keeping his palm on my leg. "I thought I told you, Cady, to address me otherwise, within the four walls of a hotel suite."

I lowered my chin another inch and bit my lip. When several seconds passed and I didn't reply, Liam's grip tightened further. His other hand pushed me back onto the bed until I lay flat, legs over the side, and he rose above me. He leaned down, each styled, chestnut strand of hair manicured into place even as the heat from his body washed over me, forming a wall that blocked me from the open expanse of the room. Blocked me from anywhere except the downy comforter on either side of me.

I closed my eyes and lifted my chin as his lips, peppered by a fine layer of scruff, brushed down my neck. I let out an exhale of pleasure, despite myself, and Liam drew his lips up towards my ear.
"Say it, Princess."

He dragged back down my neck, his teeth and tongue now dappling the sensitive skin. I felt the mattress sink as Liam's hands pressed down on either side of me, further trapping me beneath him. But he kept his torso back, his hands away, so the only part of us that touched was his mouth on my skin. "I want to hear you say it."
