A/N This is a better ending to "In the Forest (Velvet x Antfrost) by Dumpster_Panda. This is a fanwork so it's different. It's set in chapter 13 of "In the Forest" after the flashback. Thank you for letting me write this. Also this was moved from my oneshot book as it was too long for it.

RedVelvet's POV

Red ignored the pain in his leg as he ran, ran over to Ant. It did not matter that he was in pain, none of it mattered. He would not make the same mistake again, ten years later. He would not live with the shame, the pain, and the regret that he felt everytime he thought about Vanilla. He wouldn't turn his back again. He wouldn't leave knowing that there was a chance to save Ant.

Whereas before the smoke had only been a noxious smelling gas in the air, it was now an aggressive smog burning through his throat. Coughing with all his might, Red tried to keep the thick, black smoke out of his lungs as he walked through, but he couldn't. It was like water, sliding into every open crevice both in and around him, rendering him unable to breathe. He could feel his eyes water and burn, but he kept them open as he could see the faint shape of the house through the thick smoke. Everything hurt, but he persisted.

Soon enough, he could see a faint shape in the distance, something or someone curled up in the fetal position against the back wall. Parts of the once white and brown fur were now burned off, leaving some exposed skin, and the fur was covered in a layer of ash, turning the fur a darker shade. A trail of dried crimson blood coated the floor, clearly originating from the cat hybrid. Maybe the only benefit of the fire was that it cauterized their wounds, which was probably the only reason that Ant was still alive and not dead from blood loss. With much effort Red crashed next to Ant, sitting down.

"I'm scared," Ant whispered, his words separated by coughs.

"I know."

"Are-e we going to die?" Ant tentatively asked.

"As much as I would like to say no, I don't know. I could've died, three times, four even, if you count getting shot here, but I'm still alive and I have the scars to prove it. Maybe we'll survive this," Red said, trying and failing to be reassuring. His vision was starting to fade out, black dots were appearing in his vision, everything he could see was rimed in faded black.

The flames rocketed into the sky, approaching the lovers huddled on the floor. The sky was dark with bright bursts of flame cutting through the smoke occasionally. The heat was aggressive, making the whole landscape seem like hell.

"If we die?" Ant whispered, with his eyes clenched shut. The lure of death was coming closer and closer as he grasped Red's arm. They weren't going to survive, he wouldn't be able to spend even a whole week with Red. Feeling a final tear slip from his eyes, Ant collapsed in Red's arms.

No, his story wasn't about to end like this. Red had been through so much, the fire with Vanilla, the experimentation, the slave market, the hunter, this was not going to be the thing to take him down.

As Red saw the flames loom over him, he felt a jolt of adrenaline and his pain vanished, replaced with a dark excitement. In a rush, he got up and grabbed Ant's fallen body about to be cremated by the rage filled flames. He pushed his legs to the max, not caring too much about the consequences as he ran with a speed beyond anything he had ever seen. Probably due to a combination of norepinephrine, adrenaline, and wolf hybridizing, but he honestly didn't care, as long as he could get Ant's body and himself out. When he finally got to a safe part of the forest, he collapsed due to the act of overexertion he had just performed.

His eyes closed as he lay on the floor and drifted away from the material plane.
