"Evangeline Brear," the officer said, putting the handcuffs on the woman. "You have the right to remain silent..."

Everything faded to the back of Evangeline's mind. She heard nothing being said to her. She was just focused on the fact she was being arrested for something she was sure she didn't do.

Next thing she knows she's in the interrogation room in the station. Captain Young was seated across from her, file and legal pad in hand.

"Miss Brear," he was saying. "Miss Brear!"

She snapped out of her gaze, looking up at him.

"Sorry," she whispered. "What was it?"

"I asked if you know why you're here again?" the man repeated himself.

"Oh." The woman adjusted her sitting position. "Something to do with DNA found at Rosen's murder scene, I'm assuming?"

"Yes," the man said. "And we have a testimony that's not really giving you a good look."

Evangeline looked down at the table, sighing.

The captain continued: "But, I can make this all go away if you can give me good, solid evidence that proves your innocence and points us toward the real killer. Did you find anything?"

"No," she shook her head. "I hadn't had enough time. I was just reaching the crime scene photos when I was brought in."

"You found nothing?" Young echoed. "Dammit, Brear! I had faith in you."

"I'm so sorry!" Evangeline cried. "I tried. I really did! I looked everywhere! I checked everything I had access to! There's nothing!"

"Evie," the man said after a few breaths. "If you can't prove you're innocent, you're going away on two counts of manslaughter."

"I know!" Evangeline shouted. "I tried. I got taken before I could finish looking!"

"I'm sorry, Detective," the man said, tearing a piece of paper from the legal pad. He sighed and looked toward the camera in the corner of the room. Glancing back to the woman, he held out his hands to her.

She took them both in her own and they shook.

"I wish I could have helped you more," the man said, taking his hands back. "And that this wasn't happening."

"Me too," the woman replied. "I'm going to miss the squad."

"And they'll all miss you."

He stood and nodded to her in farewell.

"Goodbye, Brear."

"Young."

The door shut behind him and Evangeline waited a moment before uncurling the paper he had slipped into her hands. It was the page of notes from the statement Anastasia had given him.

"No fucking way," Evangeline whispered to herself. "That little bitch."

The trial arrived.

Evangeline was being tried for the murders of Rambeau and Rosen. Now that she knew what Anastasia had said to the officers during her interrogations and testimonials, the suspended detective had a feeling she could free herself. But only if she played her cards right.

The only problem she had run into so far was trying to come up with a motive for the other woman to frame her. What had she ever done to the Russian to get her to want to put her in jail?

She kept coming up blank.

Captain Young kept telling her to come up with something that could save her from lockup, but that wasn't helping her memory or thought process any.

She needed to find out the truth.

And fast.
