warnings: mention of hospital, loss of spouse

Y/N's chest heaved a sigh as she through her in park. Her home's driveway had been a beacon of solace since her shift had started at the hospital. Her face quirked itself into a smile seeing the lights of the livingroom shining through the window.

Her body ached in the seat, waning off of the 13 hour shift she had just worked. Her scrubs smelled sterile, like copper and alcohol. She willed herself out of the car, muscles tense as she did so. Her keys set in her hand, she moved as quickly as she could to the door, eager to feel the warmth of her home.

Laughter began to echo through the front door, her key pausing at the cherished sound. The deep vibration of her husband's chuckle tugged at the corner of her lips once more. The accompanied giggle of children tugged at her heart.

The lock finally turned and she nearly rushed inside to view what she had been longing to see. Aaron smiled dutifully as their young twins jumped across his frame in an attempt to tickle him. He chuckled as their small hands squirmed without direction against his sides. Jack and Corey sat next to each other, bent focused over a comic book, pointing out different characters. Her middle child had seemed to be the only one to notice her existence.

"Momma!" the seven year old's face lit up, as Y/N dropped her keys on the hook by the door. Small hands grabbed at her legs clutching the tired material to gain some closeness.

"Hi baby," she hummed out, bending to pull her child's body around hers, arms around her neck, legs around her waist, face pressed into her neck. "How was your day?"

"It was good," Nicky mumbled into her skin. "Missed you, momma."

Y/N tightened her hold, a hand rubbing up her back. "I missed you, too, sweetie but I'm here now."

"Sweetheart? I didn't hear you come in." Aaron scooped the twins off his lap and settled them on the couch. Y/N laughed, rocking slightly with the weight of her child in her arms.

"Well, I could see you were a little busy, hun." Nicky giggled as Y/N pressed against her husband for a kiss. Aaron bent down, blowing a raspberry against his stepdaughter's skin, causing her to giggle and squirm to be set down.

Aaron tucked his wife's back against his chest, kissing the side of her head. "How was work today?"

Y/N sighed, fully giving into the weight of his arms around her. "Tiring, but I'm here now."

He hummed as they watched their kids giggle with each other. Y/N sighed happily, glad to be a part of something so pure. She remembered when it was just her, Nicky and Corey, trying to heal from the loss of something she had thought would break her. Her marriage had been anything but healthy, the love had faded long before. Now, in Aaron arms, she knew this was the love she was meant to fell.

Aaron tightened his grip. "What are you thinking about?"

Y/N said nothing as she moved to rub the back of her two eldest children, blood or not, she gave them both peck on the head, murmuring "I missed you guys" into their head. A quiet "hey mom" was heard from both of them and she shook her head at her preteens. The twins were whining a bit now, from they're spot on the couch where they both looked ready to fall asleep. She moved to give them both a kiss.

"Daddy," Emmy made grabby hands at her father, her soft voice pulling him closer to the couch. "Up please."

Jamie climbed his way into his mother's lap, wrapping his tired arms around her neck. Y/N welcomed the weight of her 3 year old and quickly realized she would rather die than move from where she sat.

"Baby," Aaron hummed from next to her, she rested her head against his shoulder. "What's going on in that head of yours?"

"We're entirely too lucky to be here," she smiled. "I don't think I've ever felt this kind of love before. For anyone, from anyone, but the humans in this house."

"I don't think we're too lucky." He pressed another kiss against her forehead. "I think we're exactly where we need to be."
