Chapter one

Today is my first day at Hogwarts so my parents, brother, and I make our way to kings cross station to catch the Hogwarts express. When we get there, we walk through the wall to platform 9&3/4 to get to the Hogwarts express. As soon as we get to the platform I check the time on my watch: 10:57am.

"The train leaves in 3 minutes," I tell my parents "we should probably go on now"

They nod and give us both hugs before we get on the train. As soon as we step on the train, we're greeted by staff telling us that they will come around to give us food throughout the train ride and that we will be arriving at Hogwarts in 7 hours. After talking to the staff we set off to try and find a compartment to sit in ready for this long trip.

The hallway has dark brown wood walls and a blue carpet. We finally find a free compartment and sit down. I look out the window to see my parents standing there waving at us as the train leaves. Once we officially leave the station I grab out my book and I read for a couple of hours before closing my eyes just to rest them for a little bit.

"Julia!" My brother says while he jostles my arm

"What?" I croak slowly opening my eyes to reveal a dark sky outside

"We're here, you fell asleep for a while" he laughs

"Oh shit I didn't realise I fell asleep" I reply

We grab our trunks and other bags, stepping out the the compartment to see a hallway full of kids trying to leave at the same time. I groan and suddenly I want to go back to sleep again.

As I'm walking with the big group of students I see an old big brick building with towers and lots of hallways, which means I'll probably be getting lost a lot. At the entrance, I see a short man holding up a sign saying "NEW STUDENTS COME HERE" followed by other signs on the floor saying the year level starting at 2nd year. I go and stand with the another person standing behind the 6th year sign. She turns around and looks at me before smiling and introducing herself as Maddie.

A few minutes later I see a tall man with a white beard and white hair coming up to our group.

"Hello new students, I'm your headmaster Professor Dumbledore. Welcome to Hogwarts!" He exclaims with an Irish accent "Follow me to my office where I'm going to sort you into houses. You can leave your luggage here, the elves will bring it to your dorms."

Confused, we all followed professor Dumbledore to a huge white room filled with books, plenty of shelving, and an old and dusty hat sitting in the middle.

"Now students, this is a sorting hat which sorts you into one of our 4 houses here based on the qualities each of you possess. This includes Gryffindor representing chivalry and bravery, Ravenclaw representing creativity and wisdom, Hufflepuff which represents loyalty and kindness, and finally, Slytherin which values people who are cunning and ambitious. Now I am going to call out names and if I call you out come and sit down on this chair underneath this hat."  He gestures towards the chair before looking down at a piece of parchment to read out the names.

After he says this I see the hat float over to the chair waiting for the first person to sit down. He goes in alphabetical order, starting with the youngest year level going to the highest. When I hear him say my brothers name I watch and listen to what the hat is saying. After a lot of deliberation with itself, it finally lands on Gryffindor and my brother stands up with a smile on his face before getting his dorm assignment and class schedule. After another person and Maddie (who was sorted into Hufflepuff) it was finally my turn. I go and take my seat underneath the floating hat and suddenly I hear a voice that sounds like it's in my head.

"Mhmm, I'm sensing that you are very ambitious and you are a really good leader. Although, you seem very loyal towards your friends and the people you care about and it over powers other traits. This makes me think that you should be in...Hufflepuff" The hat states, before I get up to go collect my dorm assignment and class schedule.

I see my brother and we hug, say goodbye, and wish each other good luck with making friends - when he assures me that he's already made friends with a couple of the other new kids in their 4th year - who also got into Gryffindor. After they do the last person , some returning Hogwarts' students come to show us to our dorms and common rooms. We all set off to find our common room and I start taking to Maddie and ask her what her dorm room number is.

"I'm in room 23" she says while looking at her piece of parchment "what about you?" She questions

"I'm in...room..." I look down at my parchment to revel the number 24 "24, I'm assuming that's the room next to yours?" I laugh

"Oh yeah, that's good that we're close" she smiles in response and I agree

When we got to the common room, the 7th year guiding us told us which directions to walk to find our dorm. After walking down the dark brown hallway - with people standing around talking - I find my room with the number 24 on the side of the door and a keyhole in the golden handle, contrasting with the dark brown door. I walk in to see a spacious room with 2 double beds on either side of the room with dark brown upholsteries and yellow checked blankets neatly placed on top. My trunk and other bags are placed in front of the unoccupied bed indicating that it's my bed, and a person lying on the other bed with their stuff in the same position.

"Oh hi roomie!" A British voice sounds

"Oh hi, I'm Julia Hart. What's your name?" I ask nervously

"Nice to meet you Julia, I'm Nina Connell. Are you new? Because I don't think I've ever seen you around here before"

"Yeah, I'm in my 6th year."

"Oh same, I'm in my 6th year too! We might have classes together, can I see you schedule?"

I hand her my schedule while she analyses our classes together and comes to the conclusion that we have 4 together.

"Well, welcome to Hogwarts and I hope I don't annoy you too much throughout this year" she laughs earning a smile from me

After I unpack some stuff it's time for me to put on my robes and go to dinner, where there is a big feast and the sorting ceremony for the new 1st year students. Professor Dumbledore is giving a really long speech and after he finished taking, we start discussing our classes and what we did during the summer. I sat next to Maddie, Nina and Maddie's roommate; Sarah. After dinner we all raced back to the dorms preparing to go to sleep to start a new day of school tomorrow.
