Present Day                                                                   2021

Hi, I'm Ollie. I'm 17, and I'm a murderer.

Before you call the police, you should know that I'm not a murderer exactly, it's more like something inside of me is. More accurately someone.

It was an accident, I promise. I didn't mean to kill anyone; it was just kind of something that happened. Technically it's not my fault, but I know you won't believe me. If I'm going to tell you this story accurately then I need to start where everyone does: the beginning.

It was our 15th birthday, when it started. My twin Lia had been planning on running for a while- since she was 12 and our dad broke her arm. I used to want to run with her... until I met Shea. At the risk of sounding cliche, she changed everything for me. Her laugh always made me laugh and I loved spending time with her. I never told her how I felt because I was terrified she didn't feel the same.

It's fucking hard, being a lesbian in the south. You can't tell anyone unless you are absolutely sure they won't hate you, harrass you, attack you. I never worried about those things with Shea, but I also didn't want to ruin our friendship.

Shea's transgender, part of why we're so close. We both have psychotic parents too- when she told her mom that her "boy body" didn't feel like her, her mom freaked. That woman's batshit crazy to begin with, and I suppose that sent her over the edge. Shea came and lived with us for a while, until the accident. I think that's what hurt the most at the end, that it was Shea who ended it. I'm getting ahead of myself again aren't I?

Let's talk about Shea.  She was beautiful- a six foot tall queen. Her long braids, her dark tinted skin, her crazy blue eyes. Not only her body, but her mind was breathtaking. She was one of those people who always noticed things no one else did, you know? Always talking about adventure, about leaving this town and building a life with me. We planned everything together, joined at the hip until that night.

On the night of the accident, we had been talking about what to get Lia for our birthday. We didn't really celebrate holidays in our house, seeing as how our dad was always drunk or high, and our mom was never there. This one was special though- Lia told me she was finally getting out. The plan was that she would run first, find a town and an apartment, then let me know when she was safe. After that Shea and I would meet up with her, and that would be the start of our new lives. But nothing's ever that simple, is it?

2019- June

"Ollie!" I looked up at Shea, who was pissed.

"What S?" She rolled her eyes at me before saying "I've been calling your name for 10 minutes! I was asking you for suggestions for Lia's present? It needs to be something practical before she leaves... maybe a knife?"

My eyes widened. "A knife?", I asked. "Are you crazy? If my dad finds Lia with a knife he'll break her other arm."

"Shhh!!" Someone in the back of the library yelled at us. Shea gave me a pointed look.

"You want her to be able to defend herself right?" she said while stacking books. "We can't give her a gun, but a knife I should be able to steal."

Maybe I should mention- Shea's a thief. I don't think the girl's paid for anything in her life actually.

I nod my head in agreement. "Yeah you're right. Are you done stacking the books? We could probably hit up a gas station on the way to Ellis' to get a knife."

We had our party at Ellis's- his parents were the only one's in this fucked up town that were half decent. They kept their homophobia and racism on the DL, unlike most people here. They like our friend group enough to tolerate us at their house- on occasion.

Shea chucked some books in a corner and dusted her hands off. "All done!", she said grinning. "Now come on" She grabbed my hand and started walking towards the door.

After we made it to the street and past the library, she pulled me to a corner and grabbed my face. I blinked a few times looking at her electric eyes, a little confused. She pulled my head forward and met my lips with hers.
"You have no idea how long I've waited to do that." Shea says, glancing up at me.
I had a crazy grin on my face- "Me too."

We walked the rest of the way to the gas station holding hands and laughing. Are we dating now?  my mind wondered while walking. Doesn't matter, I gotta focus on getting this knife. Shea opened the door the Mapco for me, smacking my butt while I walked by making me giggle. I walked to the soda machine while Shea began walking around the aisles, perusing until she found knives. I made sure to fill my cup up to the brim then began walking back to the register. I made eye contact with Shea, who winked. I fell forward, spilling my drink everywhere and cussing.

"Shit! I'm so sorry, I tripped" I said while looking at the guy behind the counter. He rolled his eyes and walked around carrying paper towels. Shea came up and grabbed my hand, pulling me towards the door while yelling "They found my car Ollie! We gotta go hurry up!"

"Sorry!!" I yelled again at the employee. He gave the death glare, but I don't blame him.
"Did you get the knife?" Shea looked at me with a smug grin. She pulled out a small pocket knife and tossed it to me.
"Of course I did! Always one to doubt Ollie; you need some optimism in you."

"Yeah yeah" I said. She said this to me quite often.

We walked the rest of the distance in silence, just holding hands and enjoying each other's company.
