In which El is hired by Hopper to watch over the museum and a stranger steals not only some diamonds, but her heart.
[El's POV]
Hopper told me last week to get a job, since he wants me to prove that I can handle myself outside of the town. So I asked if he could hire me, and he put me on security at the Hawkins Museum. It was small, but people came from all over to see the Hawkins Gems, some big, sparkly diamonds that they found in the quarry a few days back. I was in charge of guarding them because Hopper knew if it came to it, I could use my powers to stop anyone from stealing them.
I walk around the Museum as the sun begins to fade down into the Earth. We shut the Museum down for the night a few hours ago. My favorite part about my job was watching the diamonds catch the sunlight as it shone through the window, creating little cascading patterns of rainbows before it went to bed. I was watching the rainbows move around the room, when suddenly, I heard a noise. I get my flashlight out to look around. I've never felt more like my father than I have right now. "Who's there?" I hear nothing. I look back at the glow the diamonds are producing.
I see a shadow on the wall of a girl. "Who are you?" She wears a black mask that covers the upper half of her face, her hair flowing down her back in a ponytail. "Doesn't matter." She smiles. "Who are you?" I tilt my head. "I- My name's El." Her blue eyes stare at me "El.. that's cute." Her eyes flicker to the number on my arm. "How'd you get that?" I slap her hand away as she reaches to touch it. "None of your business." The girl nods, sitting down on the pedestal that the diamonds were placed on. "Look if you're going to steal-" "Steal? Why, I would never!" She sighs. I frown. "So what are you doing here?" She shrugs "I guess I'm just bored." She slides down onto her stomach, kicking her feet in the air. "I'm gonna have to ask you to get off of the display.." She hops off, laying down on the floor.
"Well, you aren't any fun, are you?" This girl is confusing. "My friends tell me that I'm fun.." I sit down next to her, my back leaning against the display. "Friends, eh?" I nod "Yeah.. there's Mike, and Will, and Lucas, and Dustin.. and.. Max." My stomach flips a bit when I think of Max. "Sounds like you have some really good friends. Why aren't you with them?" I sigh. "Well, Max is busy doing something.. she didn't tell me what.. It sounded important but I still feel like it was an excuse." The girl frowns, lifting her head up, the rainbows reflect off of her skin. She looks.. pretty. "I'm sure your friend wants to hang out with you.. maybe you should call her?" The girl looks at me, then looks down at the floor. "That's a good idea.." I stand up, walking over to the phone. "Hey, wait!" The girl jumps up from her spot on the floor, pressing her lips to mine. I've never felt a girls lips on my own before.. it feels.. amazing. When she pulls back, she smiles again. "A kiss, for good luck."
So I walk into one of the hallways, leaving the exhibit behind. I put some of the coins Max gave me when she told me that we could go to the arcade tomorrow into the machine, then I dial her number. It rings, and rings, and rings.. Then it stops. I frown, walking back over to the exhibit. "She didn't answer-" I look to see the mysterious girl and the rainbow glow had disappeared from the room. She had taken the diamonds, leaving a note in their place. 'Sorry I lied, I had to!' I frown again, furrowing my eyebrows. She isn't my friend.. is it okay that she lied if she isn't my friend?
I look down a bit further. Scrawled onto the paper what looked like very last minute was, 'P.S. If your friend didn't answer, call her again. I'm sure she'll pick up eventually!' So I made my way back into the hallway, inserted more coins, and dialed the number again. And again, and again until I was almost out of coins. I used the last few coins that I had, dialed the number one last time, and waited.
"Hello?" "Max, where were you?" "I uh.. I had something important to do." "There was a girl, she stole the Hawkins Gems!" "Oh, really? I'm sorry El, wish I could have been there to help." I smile "She uh.. she also.. kissed me." I hear nothing for a few seconds. "...Really? Wow.. what was it like?" I smiled "It was amazing!" I leaned against the wall. "Better than Mike?" I giggle "Yeah.. way better!" I could feel that she was smiling along with me. "That's great.. Listen, I'll see you at the arcade tomorrow, yeah?" "I don't have the coins anymore.." She sighs "That's okay.. I have extra." I smile. "You're the best, Max." "Yeah, yeah.. Goodnight." "Goodnight." I sigh. "...Love you." She says quietly. "Love you too, Max."
The diamonds were anonymously returned the next day. Then Max and I went to the Arcade.
